From The Star:

In recent years, teams from boys’ schools and some private schools have played alongside clubs in Mainland Football competitions, while co-ed schools have played in School Sport Canterbury’s midweek competition, but that is about to change.

By Karen Casey, the Star

A premier schools’ competition, bringing the best teams in the region together and played on Wednesday afternoons in the usual slot reserved for school sport, will start in 2015.

Mainland Football federation development manager Alan Walker said the new competition would be a “huge, positive” step for the city.

He said specific details on a format, including how schools will qualify for the competition if needed, are still to be finalised.

Walker said he was acutely aware of the risks of players choosing to play two games a week – for their school and a club.

“THe singular biggest concern for me is that the players are going to end up fatigued and burned out. All we’re asking for is a little bit of sense and sensibility to look after the player first and necessarily (their) self-serving football or school needs.”

Richard James, head of sport at the midweek competition’s defending champions, Lincoln High School, said they were looking forward to playing in a tournament involving all of the region’s schools.

“Our kids want to play against the best schools available . . . the traditional boys’ schools, which we hadn’t been able to do in the past.

“Unless we’ve organised our own fixtures, we’ve never really played them.”

He was sure the new tournament would “add a little bit of something” to schoolboy football in Canterbury.

Christ’s College’s head of sport Rob Clarke said his school supported the move.

“For us, it’s quite a different competition, obviously, moving from a Saturday to a Wednesday. It’s quite a shift in how we organise our teams and our squads, but we’re certainly looking forward to an allschool competition.”

James said the new format would provide schools the chance to test themselves out against each other, something Lincoln would embrace.

Walker said results over the years had shown it was not always the teams that played on Saturdays that have done the best on the national stage.

Five schools from Canterbury represented the region at the Lotto Premier tournament in Napier in September; two teams that played on Saturdays – Christ’s and Shirley Boys’ High School – and three that played on Wednesdays – Lincoln, Rangiora High School, and Cashmere High School. Cashmere finished highest, in 11th place.

Nothing about the fact that Mainland football have dictated to schools that they can only run trainings for school senior teams Sunday to Wednesday. This is to allow Thursday to Saturday for club involvement by a player.

if Mainland left the 2 parties to sort themselves they'd be cries of negligence.

Great result to finally get this standalone comp happening.

I agree with Foal.  Set the boundaries of who has the access to players so there won't be arguments.  Glad that this happening, shame it's not all teams in all grades, from the article it sorta gives that impression.

Interesting facts from Mr Walker regarding who places higher in national school comps.

Congratulations to Mainland's U 16 Boys, U 15 Boys & U15 Girls teams for winning the Federation Cup at the national Age Tournament in Wellington.

Is there anywhere one can see who is in these NTC squads? Mainland Football's website does not appear to have squad lists of theirs, or at least hard to find if they are there. For a supposed National Pathway, it appears pretty elusive to anyone but the players. Strange.

At least one of the Wellington teams was changing its roster on the Saturday the tournament started, so not sure it's quite as serious as you cantabs might be taking it.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

You saying that NTC not made up of the very best players from each Federation?

gasp but here in the mainland if you don't do FTC you will never ever ever never play for nz! (Pretty much a direct quote to a 10 year old from the federation!)

Who left?

You can ascertain what your opponent is afraid of by observing the means by which he attempts to frighten you

Those squads have nothing to do with NTC

It was a Tournament for various Regional FTC squads.

NTC is something different again.

6 team D1 Grades

All of 18 D2 is school 2ndXI's.

SBHS have sides in 16D1 and 15D1, they are the only 2 school teams in

First 3 games are grading games, could get a bit confusing after that...

I see that A & B bands in 10th & 11th grade are split into 2 pools. I wonder if they will take the top of each of the pools later in season if there ate any teams suffering big loses/wins.

if you dine with the devil, take a long spoon.

Nothing for the 18's yet, I bet it's hard work trying to juggle where the school teams are going to be when some first XI players are playing for their own club, some all at a different club, and some going into their second teams. Not really how it was supposed to work but oh well.

All the grades are up there now. Unfortunately my kids play at the same place on 4 occasions at exactly the same time. I might ask if Mainland can please change all games and times just so it suits me.

Just go to the games of the kids you like

That's what I do.

What is the final word on grading grades and is it uniform across all grades?

I was told it was after 3 games, however in 6 team leagues that's stoopid. Might as well wait till 5 games.

Not expecting a thinking persons logic and Mainland Football to be in the same frame are you.

Oh well we can but hope the staff read blogs on here and then come up with a bright idea and make as you say.

I see from the new FTC schedule the Wednesday sessions for the 12's and 13's are shortened by 30 minutes. I wonder if they are going to reduce the cost accordingly.

The bonus is that all sessions are at ASB so no hikes to Tullett Park or Burnside High this term.

and 16's down to 1 session per week this term.

16s has been reduced to 1 session a week to allow for players to do club, school 1st XI & FTC. Think it was part of the bargaining chip to get the schools out of saturdays. Seems weird still having all their other teams though

Universities must have a whole bunch of Doogie Howsers if they have a team of 11 year olds.

Apparently a 0-22 score in the 11's out at Selwyn by team kitted out in CFA.  Nice!
