Got to do something about it. Wednesdays School 1st 11 football  gets the better players from year 10s to 13s playing each other. It's competitive.  Copy the age band for a Super youth Saturday league..  

You could well be right about Ferrymead being there or there about as they have strengthened up this season.

That's a sound idea Craig. The only difference between the Schools competition and a Club competition I see is that players have no opportunity to move to a stronger team in the Schools competition. (leaving moving schools out of the equation)

The major problem is the gravitation of the best players to a very small number of clubs leaving the other sides struggling. Is there anything to be done about this trend?

Hats off to NZ womens under 17 coach Leon Bernie for venturing down to Christchurch to watch the best of Mainland talent in an Observation game.  

It's a bit frosty.

I am sure it was like this every Saturday in the late 60's when I was playing for Cashmere Wanderers and biked to Hagley Park most weekends to play.

Climate Chane is real.

Foal and I used to play at Burwood Park and with a line of tall trees the frost wouldn't disappear until midday. Possibly the reason why I still don't slide tackle. Or tackle at all to be honest.

Big 10 days for a lot of juniors with Christchurch Football Centre running the second year of their international cup. Under 13's and 14's start Sunday and 9,10',11 and 12 grade start following Friday. Teams from Australia, auckland, timaru and Dunedin attending. 13th grade looks to be a cracker wither 5 teams all good enough to win it.

Message from Mainland Football:

This is the wettest winter on record and the grounds are not going to improve over the next few weeks. Therefore we can no longer wait for grounds to recover or improve as they won't. We all have to make the best of a bad situation.

Football is a winter sport and players can wear skins, thermals, beanies, gloves etc to keep themselves warm.

Please note that the City Council are currently having difficulty marking grounds, so common sense prevails and you may need to use corner flags/poles etc to mark fields.

Multiple ground changes have been made for tomorrow's games (29.07.17) and the Snapshot is now available to view on the Mainland website. Changes will be made on a week by week basis, and we will try to have as many games played.

The role of Academy Coach is to manage and oversee all players and staff within his team. In addition, the Academy Coach makes sure that he is applying the Academy’s Player Development Plan, and works within the philosophy of the Academy.

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated coaches, who are willing to take it’s coaching development very seriously. Youth Level 3 coaching certficate will give you an advantage, but is not compulsory. Compensation will be available depending on experience and qualification. We are also willing to help with further education.

Another excellent Waimak 9th grade festival today. Enjoyed by 24 teams and supporters. Final fought out by 2 very skillful CFC teams. Good to see junior football alive and well at so many clubs. Nothing like a bit of post season tournament football. Should be more of it.

so, I have asked this before. Who knows much about upcoming youth licences? Plenty of murmurs. Clubs trying to fill FDO positions. Will we see lots of player movement? Will small clubs die? Is this the same model that was used in Auckland?

Hi All,

Just returned from Queenstown and the cracking 13th Grade South Island Tournament.

Canterbury got up in the final 3-2 over Nelson after being 2-0 down and then forcing extra time. The two finalists had also met in pool play for a 3-1 Canterbury victory.

The thing that disturbs me is that Mainland are canning the SI Tournaments in their current form and making them Club based. Most of the parents that attended signed petitions opposing this.

Does anyone on this site have an opinion?

Dear Parents & Players

This email has been sent to all players/parents that attended the Canterbury trials process this year.

I hope you have had (or having) a great time at your respective tournaments across the south island for those selected.

I just wanted to drop you a line to say these tournaments will continue to operate, however, under a mixed-model of rep and club representative football for the players.

This will allow for more players to have more opportunities to attend the tournaments across the south island.

You will have heard and seen misinformation that has been circulating with regards to players having the opportunity to attend these tournaments.

With this in mind, I have attached a document that we have circulated to clubs, coaches and on social media that we were planning on sending next week. However, in light of current information in the marketplace we thought it was appropriate to get this to you at the soonest opportunity.

The landscape of football has evolved in recent years and with this we have undertaken discussions between the Federations, with Districts and with Clubs over the past months on how to future-proof our game and meet our continued strategic needs moving forward.

There shall be further detailed information provided in the coming weeks to add to the messages presented.

If this is Football Quality being improved then great. If its Revenue Accelerate then no.

I'll get back to this Hawki. 

One of the main tenets of the SportNZ strategy is "Balance is better" i.e. not specializing too early. All I can see out of Mainland Footballs new strategy is more kids "specializing" through the desire of parent/coaches to take the kids to the frigging world cup (metaphorically obviously) - yep been there done that. So, more kids will get serious about their "chosen" sport as they focus on performing at tournaments. I thought the intention was for cross-code/life skills balance? Can't see this outcome at all by merely increasing the opportunity of more and more kids to get higher opportunities through football, don't these already exist in clubland? In fact canning the tournaments or reducing them and telling the kids to head off to tennis, cricket, softball, athletics etc for the summer would probably be more beneficial to my mind.

Interesting that all of the case studies quoted on the SportNZ website in support of their strategy are high achievers in their own right as though every kid with aspirations could turn out like that. A short term focus with no mention of coaches, referees, judges, administrators so absolutely a focus on winning. Where are the ones who successfully walked away from their dream and found fulfillment in other fields? Build the win-win, don't reinforce the winners/losers scenario and you might get a better outcome. Success comes through desire, desire is fueled by passion and passion drives performance. Encourage kids to find a sport/pursuit they are passionate about and you might get better outcomes - I agree Foal, flag the corporate speak and get on with serving the game.

I also see this as strengthening the hold of some of the bigger/more powerful clubs. Is that in the best interests of the game? 

What could also become interesting for federations such as Mainland is that in a few years time, as a result of the Sports NZ directive, Sport Specific Federations won't be applicable for certain aspects of funding such as KiwiSport

From next year South Island Tournaments will continue to be part of our football landscape. Tournaments will move to a mixed models of Club teams and District teams. The objectives here are simple. Provide more opportunities to more players and coaches and supporters to be involved in these tournaments. The ability for teams to go away and experience tournament football is limited to only a few now. 

The South Island Tournaments have always been a participation focused tournament. This will give club based teams the chance to test their ability against other teams from around the country. This also supports our overall strategy of growing club capability and delivery by them of various programs and opportunities for its members.

Your last paragraph is how we are (and have been) for some time. I'm not convinced in totality it is in the best interests of the game but in some facets IT MOST CERTAINLY is.

Any hub based delivery is potentially damaging for the membership of the satellite clubs. However a 'greater' opportunity to all players could be offered. 

FWIW Sydney NSW pretty much cap their clubs at Year 8 then the players go to a "super-club" type thing. 

We could run a comp here in Chch, Year 7 Prems

North ( Waimak Nomads Papanui SAS)

East (Coastal Burwood Parklands)

South East ( Bays, CTFC)

South West ( Selwyn Hornby Halswell )

West (Fc2011 Chch U ) etc etc make your own version

All clubs deliver First Kicks Fun Football NZF in house and have whatever extra training with their own coaches from their.
