English Cup FT Result - Selwyn 2 - Western 0

Goals to Dan Ede and Declan Hickford.

Absolute cracking game. Western looked to have the better of Selwyn in the opening 20 mins having 3 shots denied by an inform Keeper.

Selwyn then lost a man to a red card (Sorry don't know why I couldn't see it).  Western continued to put pressure on but couldn't finish.

HT 0-0

Second Half - Western for the most part looked like they were playing with 10 men as selwyn soaked up the pressure and countered very well - using the wind in some cases.  It took till the 85ish min before Ede managed to slide one past the keeper to go 1-0 up only for Selwyn to again put a ball out right who found Hickford - and after some poor defence hickford pushes it through defender and keeper ending the game.

Interesting that this is the complete opposite to what happened in the Selwyn/Western MPL game a couple of weeks ago.

Copied off Selwyn facebook page:

Selwyn United are proud to announce that Matt Sheridan, Jonny Sims and Finn Surman have all been signed by the Phoenix.

Matt Sheridan made the move up to Wellington in early January, and following a successful trial last month, Finn and Jonny have done the same.

Both Jonny (16) and Finn (15) have played for Selwyn through their respective age groups. They have been loyal members to the club who both recently made their senior MPL debuts against FC 2011 and Western. Having also represented SUFC at South Island tournaments and going on to represent Mainland at National Age Group tournaments, it was inevitable these boys had a bright future.

As a club we are immensely proud of how hard all three boys have worked to get to the Phoenix at such a young age. We wish the boys the best of luck as they make the move to Wellington, away from their families and friends.

To have three players signed by the Phoenix in the first four months of 2019 is testament to the hard work, planning and implementation of our very own Selwyn Talent Centre. STC looks to provide players with an environment that can prepare them for future professional endeavours. Hence it is great to see three of our very own players signed by New Zealand’s only professional club!

Also whoever was doing the Bays tweets may want to ensure who they’re playing as apparently Selwyn pulled a goal back against them! ?

Yes some of the late decision making by Western players was the Pitts really, Stanty would have been shaking his head at that one as it probably cost them the game. From where I was it was hard to figure out what happened, bit of needle from the sideline got the better of the referee?

Geez Bays blew a chance there to move into South Island League contention, great result for FC. Nomads catching Nelson on the hop as well. That 5th playof spot still up for grabs, even Selwyn might fancy themselves the way things are going.

A combination really. There was a foul on a Western player that the referee missed. The player was in a fair bit of difficulty ( upsetting to see tbh), and quite a few people had a fair bit to say. One of them must have already been warned and so took a walk. Coastal went on and scored two quick goals. Game over from then on.

I felt the referees control of the game was pretty poor, and the assistant in front of us was not doing so well at keeping up with play, missing two offsides that were pretty clear if he had been in the right place.

Not sure where you got your facts from Ronaldoknow. The western player was sin binned and didn’t just walk from the field.

Great to see in the Chatham Cup next weekend that Selwyn have elected to play their tie against ChCh United under lights at on  Saturday evening at 6pm, should ensure a good crowd.

I think he is referring to a player walking off after we scored our third (or maybe fourth). This was in addition to the sin binned player so they had 9 on the field for a brief period. He may have been injured perhaps.

Haha really? I saw him walk off I didn't see why. Tough with 9 men... That's 3 sinbins for Western in the two games we've played.
