Wow! This hasn't been picked-up on in NZ but the new US Women's Team coach is a former Christchurch United player, Tom Sermanni !

Sermanni played for Christchurch United in the NZ National League in 1986 after emigrating from Scotland.

His appointment to the US Women's job has lead to Christchurch United being mentioned in news reports all over the world, especially in the US and Scotland.

Sermanni's playing career: http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/Players/S/SC.html

1973 - 78 - Albion Rovers (Scotland)
1977- 78 -  Blackpool (England)
1978/9 - Dundee United (Scotland)
1979 - 82 - Torquay United (England)
1982/3 - Dunfermline (Scotland) .
1984 - 85 - Canberra City (NSL)
1986 - Christchurch United (New Zealand)

"Sermanni was born in Glasgow and played as a midfielder in Scotland, England, Australia and New Zealand. His career saw him start out at Cumbernauld United before moving on to Albion Rovers, Blackpool, Torquay United, Dumferline Athletic, Canberra City and Christchurch United."

Sermanni's US women's team play the Football Ferns Oct. 27 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco and Oct. 30 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

I sure Tommy  was the Aussie Women's coach at one stage, if not the senior side then one of the aged grouped sides.

Correct - a long and distinguished coaching career in Oz - men's sides incl. NSL sides, Hiroshima in J-League, Aussie national women's team '94-'96, 2005 - 2012 etc.

aside from the teams that have won their grades? Win or lose the families choose to stay at the club, as opposed to jumping ship every season often due to the misguided belief that their little Timmy somehow deserves to be in a better team.

Fair-weathered decisions   and short term-ism are not in the coaching manual at progressive football clubs.

Ouch, did I strike a nerve?

All that jumping ship malarkey, not sure what thats all about but it comes down to coaches with personal agendas - every parent wants the best for their child and the coaches are no different. I believe kids don't change clubs because of their egos (or their parents) but because they want a fair go and therfore can continue on with their own personal delvelopment without being held back. Kids can be in a well organised, winning team, playing along with other kids who could be technically better and still develop into representive all round footballers. Its common knowledge that in what ever you do, you progress quicker if you surround yourself with people with a higher skill set than you, be that colleague or competitor.

You don't need a 'progressive club' to tell you that

Permalink Permalink

Common knowledge is seldom common application

Most players move when they fail to make the side they wanted.

Working in a higher skill set group is always ideal, however that requires the agreement of the players with the higher skill-set. If it's all about my/your/his  own personal development  then those guys will always be looking elsewhere. Where too then?

But don't you think its a bit odd that when a coach 'blacklists' a player and deems them to be not good enough for his team ( theres lots of non legitimate reasons why coaches don't want a player), yet when they move to another club not only do they make the top team but  excel and thrive within it at the respective top level. - you can't pigeon hole players desires to move on & up on just sour grapes

Permalink Permalink

I'm not pigeon holing it as such, simply offering an explanation of the most common reason IME.

If there is 18 players capable of making a 14 man squad at Club A , but only 6 capable of making it at Club B then moving from A to B will surely increase your selection chances of playing in that grade. They may well thrive. It may also explain why larger Club A type set ups may choose to run with balanced squads.

Who blacklists players at junior level? Seems a bit extreme. What is a non-legitimate reason to not pick a player? Can you give an example please. The one that springs to mind for me is players with parents so unashamedly awful and troublesome that the player would never be good enough to cover the baggage the parents bring.

You are one of those faceless people yourself mate. Pretty brave to attack someone on here who you clearly know, rather than have the stones to actually have your say face to face. Until you grow said balls, have the decency to wind your neck in eh? Gutless clowns like you are the 4% of parents that f&$k it all up for the rest. And you can be assured that I will not hesitate to repeat this to your more than likely unfortunate looking face.

Waimak getting stroppy with Mainland Football...(email just received)

North Canterbury Representative Football

It was pleasing to see so many of our club members representing our district proudly over the holiday period.  We gained some excellent results considering generally we have only one team at each agegroup that plays at Division One level during the regular season, compared to a lot of other districts such as Canterbury, Otago, Nelson, Marlborough, and South Canterbury, who all run their own Division One competitions with 6-8 teams of players to choose from.  So we congratulate all of the representative players on their effort and dedication.

Now that the South Island tournaments are complete we wish to inform our members of the situation surrounding District representation going forward.  As a club, charged with administering the North Canterbury rep program, we were forced to sign a Governance Protocol agreement to ensure our rep teams could attend tournaments this year.  This protocol stipulates that essentially the management of the district representative program can no longer be administered by our Board, and also includes the need for all new uniforms by 2014 for all North Canterbury rep teams, separate and distinct from our black Waimak strip.  There are also a number of other rulings around player eligibility that will affect our membership.

As the Waimak United Board will no longer manage the Representative program, we are unsure if or what future there is for North Canterbury teams at tournaments.  We cannot answer any questions relating to this program as new administration may be setup in due course to run the North Canterbury rep program.  We can only suggest that you address any queries to Mainland Football.  The protocols were advised by Mike Coggan so he may be able to assist, contact details are: mike.coggan@mainlandfootball.co.nz

It is the view of the Waimak United Board that we would like our representative players to attend tournaments and will be looking at the option of sending teams to club Nationals similar to those currently attended by our 9 and 10 year old teams.  These tournaments will be more evenly fought competitions with clubs of similar membership to ourselves.

Again, we congratulate our representative players on their efforts, and the proud history we have forged.

North Canterbury population growing, yet Dougie's message indicates players will potentially have to trial, train and play for Canterbury (Christchurch city), unless separate entity is established to run the North Canterbury rep programme. Selwyn district also growing but they seemed to be heeding Mainland advice - (smoke and mirrors probably but well done) & set up a new website dedicated entirely to Selwyn rep football. Not sure of the reason behind this. Anyone hazard a guess? More work for volunteers by the looks of it.

Should current Canterbury rep teams really just be called Christchurch; or do Selwyn and North Canterbury merge in with a wider Chch/Canterbury selection & Mainland run the entire rep programme? Consolidation vs Regionalisation.

From what I have heard cost is a factor here.  Waimak unhappy about having to fork out $15k for new shirts when they only use them for 3 days.  Mainland don't give any funding to help run the rep program so Waimak cop the lot.  Mainland do get funding for Canterbury teams though but not shared across the region.  Waimak don't want to use their funding when they have perfectly good playing strips.
Selwyn already had a rep entity set up - they had to set up a new club to play in the Mainland comps.
I wonder where Mid Canty sit in this - are they are rep entity, a Mainland district, or a club??
Are South Island tournaments past it?  Should we have more club tournaments?  Nelson gone that way with the 10's by the looks of it.

Wow! The players get the " benefit " of coaching advice from 4 separate coaches, alongside the goalkeeping coach, with Wanda doing the " step and fetchit " stuff. Doesn't matter what they dress their job titles up as, this is OVERKILL. I think Messrs Turnbull and Gunn should you know, just do what they're employed to do...

And they're not? High profile team looking to go one step further than they did last season, what's wrong with wrapping a good management team around them if it's in the budget and adds to the team? See you at the game this weekend.

Absolute rubbish. This is merely employing jobsworths to do what? line up the cones because Gareth and Gunny can't? What kind of technical analysis are Joe and Tsetso going to do in a competition that lasts about 6 games? Sit around poring over dvds of their opposition? It's a joke. You can't tell me that Gareth and his assistant are so busy that they can't do it:That's what they're employed to do. I seriously question whether these additional coaches can, like you believe, " add to the team " . Oh I forgot though, you're a coastal die hard and Gareth and Gunny are from where...?

Sorry benchwarmer, no physio in that picture. They obviously couldn't fit him/her in...

Whoa, what's got you all bitter and twisted? Who said Joe and Tsetso were there to provide technical analysis anyway? I doubt they would be as they won't get to travel to the away games anyway. Maybe they've been brought in to gain experience in that environment or possibly because both Gareth and Gunny work full time and may have other commitments occasionally that prevent them from attending every training they are there as cover? Either way I'm happy with that set up regardless of who the coaches are and even more pleased it's pissing you off.
Guess where Aimee Phillips is playing her football next year?
Laughing with you Ray :)

Haha love how you've pegged me as a Western supporter. Why, 'cause I said some complimentary things about them after they beat your girls in the Rita semi-final? I never knew that a prerequisite of this thread was to support one particular club...

You have your opinion concerning the coaching numbers, I have mine: 4-6 coaches for a team playing at this level is ridiculous.Gareth and Gunny should just do the job they were employed to do, not surround themselves with jobsworths...If they can't make training, why not get Vink to do it? She's been involved with Canty teams in this capacity.

Furthermore, anyone who reads this thread knows you are a fervent Coastal supporter, who also likes to poke the poo from time to time at Mainland football as an entity, but when actual staff, affiliated to your beloved are mentioned, you get all huffy and defensive. If the head coaches for Pride were from Cashmere,Western, Halswell etc, you'd be " in like Flynn " with snidey comments mocking them for doing this.

You're a football hypocrite
