The two clubs that Mainland via Colin Grant has been hitting up to merge are both playing at Tulett Park today , Western and Nomads.
They should be getting the smaller clubs to merge if they want to cut the number of clubs in the city but the small clubs do a very good job for the targeted grades they cater for.

Yer I have heard that rumour about those two before, perhaps on this forum too. Not sure if it has anything to do with FC 11.
It's a real bind for me who I would want in the MPL next year as I have a determined hatred for both Richmond and FC2011. Maybe Mid Canty could come to the party.

Coastal 1 Western 2 to calamity goal keeper kick straight to attacker who in turn chipped the keeper in last few minutes. Oh the humanity!
Damn, I did my bit by staying away (which gave us the win over Nelson) as well. Never mind, the wins will come as we become more comfortable and our Dragons players turn up. Match report?

Bays 3-0 Tech
Coastal 1-2 Western
Halswell 3-0 Nomads
ChCh Utd 1-3 Nelson
Coastal were on top for the first 15mins then Western dominated possession for the rest of the game but struggled to break Coastal down. Coastal always looked dangerous at set pieces and both teams had half chances to win it before the goalkeeper had a moment of madness. A draw would probably have been a fair result. Both teams tried to play the ball on the deck and should at the very least be in the top half of the table at the end of the season.
Also any comments on Kamo leaving Tech for Bays??????

I watched some of the two games at Tulett Park with the early game being the better one and in nice weather. It was a case of keeper blunders giving the points away in both games. The first game both teams playing or trying to play some on the deck passing and looking good. Western looked a threat getting the ball down the flanks time and time again the last pass and some good covering D kept them at bay until Matt had a minties moment while Coastal had a narrow miss from an earlier free kick from just inside the Western half.
For the second game the wind had got up and made conditions chilly for spectators. Halswell playing with the wind at their backs took the lead in the first half when the Nomads keeper made a regulation two handed catch the most spectacular of none saves, he never got a hand on it. Things didn't get any better for him in the second half as he made two more errors to give Halswell all 3 goals and the points.
Haslwell kept a clean sheet for the first time in just on two seasons [at least i think thats the case] and played the better football with not too much wasted ball in the air.

Confirmed Tech are having a few players leaving.
Kamo on $200 a game at Bays, at least that was the $ I've heard mentioned when asking the going rate.
Faichnie to Coastal and Batty to Nomads are doing the rounds, several others including a Canterbury/Tech player not in tomorrows squad.

Marlborough scrapped to a draw with FC Nelson College 2-2 today. Sounds like I was at the wrong game.Clubs to merge? What about Chch Utd. An MPL side, a PDL team thanks to Danny Hay's team needing a vehicle to stay together, a masters team or two and a barely there juniors. What constitutes a viable club?

Mainland applying the pressure to Nomads and Western to get on with a merger highlights their lack of leadership when a "club" like United is left alone. As for Danny Halligan's reserve team playing there, they offered themselves to a few other club's before settling on United. That outcome demonstrates the sham that is the Canterbury School of Football which was established by Mainland with the support of certain clubs to partly prevent just such an outcome. They got what they deserved.

But that's still not fair on the teams with one or two Canty Utd players. The FAIR solution would be have the season start after the ASB Premiership or just force tech to play regardless.

Word on the sideline is that Kamo is getting $350 a week for Bays. Surely Mainland should step in and say this is illegal and to stamp it out. Or is it too late to stop paying players now?
It's not for Mainland to determine what is legal or not. In fact paying a player to play is simply not illegal. What Mainland need to do is to draw up an agreement for all club's to sign as a pre-cursor to entry into the Premier League that covers player payments and includes things such as facilities, player development etc, etc, that all clubs must agree on before the season commences. Club's should also agree to send their audited accounts to Mainland before the end of November before they are accepted into the league the following year. Mainland should also have the right to spot check a club's accounts at any time of the season. An auditor at Mainland would do more for football than most of the staff they currently employ. Much like the NRL with their salary cap.

I thought this was an amateur competition therefore player payments were illegal. NZFC sent out a reminder to clubs this year saying that was not acceptable did they not? How is club football any different?

So are the Olympics (and the NZFC). Player reimbursements/employment are allowed. All they have to do is contract him to teach kids to tie their laces and they have circumvented any regulations.

Payment to players at MPL or going back South League and even the early years of Sunday League has been done by some clubs year on year.
Payment does not give you a better club or mean you will win anything that matters. Look at Burnside the junior section pulled away to have their own accounts from the seniors because all the money went to pay senior players, that's going back a few years but paying players to go on holiday a couple of seasons ago got them what?

Paying players seems to me to highlight deficiencies in a clubs operations and ultimately precedes it's demise from the top ranks. At least in ChCh.

Agree with the feeling on Tech v Bays yesterday, just another Mainland stuff up. At least Tech are bottom of the table.

This one's a can o worms and too big to tackle for an organisation like Mainland as it is currently set up. The legal framework for most clubs has been charitable trust status - in order to apply for gaming machine funding. You can't run a (semi) professional league on the basis of that - it's soft money and in decline. If you want to move to semi-pro (with strict - audited- financial and other criteria); clubs need hard cash - and unless you know a philanthropist with a russian or arabic name who is in the oil game, that means corporate $; which i can tell you from personal experience at a much higher level than MPL clubs, is a very hard game in this little old town (and more so since EQ). Are clubs going to be pushing for that? Some might be talking the talk, but they are dreaming.

Richmond Athletic would be the best example of player payments. What the frig is the point buying a team so you can win games 11-0 in a league no one outside of Richmond actually cares of?!

Nelson coach John Slotemaker said if the club gave him money to buy three players he could win the league easy, but he'd rather just develop players than waste money winning a league with no prizemoney.
In an amateur competition there is no point spending money to win your name on a trophy for 12 months.

Spot on Luis. But as we have seen there are clubs around that do seem to be able to find the benevolent businessman willing to put their money into the club and I accept that in those circumstances it's for the club involved then to decide where that money should be spent. Abramovich doesn't put millions into Chelski to see them develop players but to win trophies and that is the rub. If a player needs developing at Chelski he will soon find himself playing for another club.
All local clubs have that dual function of providing football for all levels from social to elite with widely varying resources. Unfortunately some have taken to rorting the Charitable Trust funding to achieve success at the elite level while others plunder their junior parents. Either way paying for food, petrol and booze for any player at the local level is foolhardy and does nothing for the game.
I actually like Richmonds approach where they are using outside money (hopefully this is true, where is the cash coming from Duffy?) to bring quality players into the local game, much as National League clubs did in the old National League days. An approach that lifted the standard of the local game and helped produce players like Wynton Rufer and Ricki Herbert (and got us to the World Cup in '82).
