Nice work. I like the way you put yourself at the top of the leader board even though Luis & Cheeko have more points :) Ronaldoknow2011-04-04 21:01:42

Perks of the job.

And I cut n paste from last week so.... Noone got a correct score last week, in fact Luis Garcia is the only person to do it. And considering I have successfully guessed 2 out of 8 games it is a lot harder than it looks. Don't you think poolmister?

My understanding of the Richmond Athletic paying thing is this...

Joe Green (their captain) came to New Zealand on holiday and was visiting some friends in Nelson. They showed him their local football club and he liked what he saw and wanted to play a game or two. Ended up coming back to start coaching in the Richmond set up and brought Jordan Yong, who was hoping to kickstart his football career, over from Norwich with him.

They did heaps of coaching and was topped up a little by Richmond.

But because Joe Green and Ben Wright, who he brought back with him this year, are quite wealthy, they pay for all the rent and Jordan and his mate Sam Mason-Smith moved, along with the Chileans. So there is like six of them living in a house with all their rent paid for. Sam's parents gave him money for the year, while Jordan gets topped up by some coaching he does for Richmond.

Long story short, Joe Green owns a house and doesn't charge them rent, so the only money they need is for food and leisure activities, which they raise by doing coaching.Luis Garcia2011-04-04 21:48:13

I was gonna wait until poolmister put up his predictions then put the opposite but here they are anyway. Western have a few missing this week so may not be as easy as people are predicting.

Thanks Luis.
Good arrangement for the club. I always thought ChCh Rangers should have kept a house when they sold off Eric Adam Park for just such a purpose but it was not to be. Perhaps New Brighton's buggered gym could become a housing complex courtesy of the insurance company?  It's a good way to bring in outside talent and was common practice back in the old National League days. More often a boarding situation where a club member would provide cheap board (that the club paid for) and sometimes provided part time work as well.

By the way was Harry McCosh in the dugout for ChCh Utd last Saturday? he shouldn't have been as he was sitting our a 1 match (red card) suspension from the last game last year.

NOT ONLY IS FC TWENTY 11 THE WORST NAME IN NZ FOOTBALL BUT IT SEEMS ACCORDING TO ALL THE DRAWS THAT THEIR NAME HAS TO BE WRITTEN IN CAPS LOCK. TALK ABOUT (I MEAN SHOUT ABOUT) MAKING SOMETHING WORSE THAN IT ALREADY IS!

Come on Suburbs! Gagame Feni returns to the line up. Brandon Kay is out. Former Christchurch United keeper Dave Crocker will have to pass a late fitness test otherwise former NZ secondary schools shot stopper Alex Coles will make his debut. Youngsters Darrell Hannah and Adam Smith have been the stars for Nelson this season and make a four-pronged attack with Jerry Donga and Gagame Feni. Expecting goals a plenty today.

Hard fought win for Western, both teams could've scored a few more but Western probably deserved it.

Yep, and that 6 contains Westerns 3rd team who are not eligible for promotion. Varsities and Parklands failed to enter Chatham Cup . Leave them there and put Cashmere, Waimak and FC2011 in the Premier League next year along with Richmond. 12 team league home and away (22 regular games) makes much more sense than 8 team 3 round League. Alternatively if Woolston and Cashmere merge, also Western/Nomads, that gives us a 10 team League. Either way a better set up than the current 8 team league. The 8 team league was established to improve playing standards, I have yet to see any improvement in the 5 years or so of this structure so who are Mainland kidding?

Being a Varsity old boy, I can tell you they haven't bothered entering the Chatham cup for a long longggg time. For a club with so little cash flow (no bar, students! and lack of sponsorship), the 250 dollar entry fee just to get humped by a Mainland league team was deemed as a waste

And do away with promotion/relegation? Or handle on basis of some sort of "club criteria" that justifies top level football?

I would go with a criteria based 10 team league if possible. Criteria would be based on abilty to develop the game in club's area. They would have to show a committment to men's and women's, juniors to seniors, and cater for players of all ability levels from social to elite. They would need to have a referee programme, need to have Club Mark Gold certification and employ a full time football development officer. They woud have to implement the whole of football plan. They would need to have a strategic plan that they could be held accountable to and be financially sound with a commitment to not paying players.
A top placed team from the league below could apply to join based on the criteria. With out the fear of relegation clubs could invest in player development throughout the league and we wouldn't get the club jumping that goes on at the moment. It's ridiculous to see clubs staying alive in the league by "buying" players in an amateur competition. Dropping the league to 8 teams has done nothing to improve the standard of football and forced some clubs to pay players in order to remain competitive. Wouldn't that money be better spent on developing young players?
Part of the problem with player development programmes is that young players shoot off to another club as soon as their premier side strikes trouble. A criteria based league should help them retain players.

Premier League would be played on Sunday afternoons to attract bigger crowds. No Sunday League games to start after 12:00 p.m. Reserve League to mirror Premier League and play before hand on same ground.

Yep. Another monster from Mainland, an absolute load of bollocks that lacks critical thinking. Expect to see some absolute hidings dished out this year. And they call it the Player Developmen League. Ludicrous.
At the pre-season Premier League meeting when the subject of the Reserve League came up Mainland wouldn't even let it be discussed. Not a single Premier League club supports it.
Similar to their decision making around Coastal's application to have a team in Men's Div 2. Turned down even though there are 3 FC2011 teams in that grade and none of them want to drop out.

Like this approach Ronaldoknow. I know someone's job you should be after with thinking like that!
Only issue I see with it is that you can't legislate against greed or ego or desperation (no matter what 'books' are presented to Mainland). Your club criteria approach also assumes the club has the good of the whole sport in mind. Unfortunately some clubs without an interest in, or little chance of building a junior pathway, will continue to "do what 'has' to be done" in the words of one club's rant, ie pay lip service to building the game but really it's all about ego, so they will pay players $300 per game & allow them to train when they feel like it. (How must the team mates who train twice a week and pay subs feel about the galacticos in the squad?). The sooner that kind of thinking is confined to history the better; but I don't have an easy solution to enforce the extinction.

Didn't know that!? What were they thinking! I'm guessing they will split the pdl league like they did last year. Agree with you re the thrashings. We played selwyn last season and pasted them because they are a new club and just finding their feet. Pretty discouraging for their lads to train twice a week knowing that they will be on the end of a pasting every sat. Do you guys play or just spectate?

I particularly like the way they call it the "Player Development League" then throw a bye in there . Great for a players development to have a weekend off footy! Such nonsense. The only way there should be a bye in any competition is in the very bottom league. This is not rocket science ffs.
