I guess that does make sense to a certain extent...Thats about as logical as mainland is gunna get. Hopefully we have a fairly dry winter this year, dont think we could handle many more ground losses

Warren Park is in very good nick, we played Utd there as their 'home' game on Saturday. I'm surprised more games aren't played there. I'm sure most teams would be willing to accommodate odd start times given the circumstances.

Agreed, mainland usually use Warren as a back up later in the season when other fields are turning to sh*t, its usually pretty good.

Maria Andrews was pretty tidy a few weeks ago when I was out there, same with Brookside. Gunna be a few roadtrips this season me thinks....

League takes a break next week due to Chatham Cup

Wouldn't it have made sense for Woolston and Western to receive a bye in the first round so they could play their Premier League catch up game next Saturday? Would have meant coastal playing Mid Canterbury, no biggy. Maybe not possible with the Chatham Cup being a drawn competition? Sometimes common sense should prevail.

I have no problem with random draws and would hope that convenience doesn't come into it. And I heard that some random byes in the first round of English Cup mean Pap Redwood, Parklands and someone else random get a free pass to round two!

With only 12 teams entering the English Cup there had to be byes.

An open draw is the fairest, better than seeding teams as this will always cause problems.

A cup is about underdogs causing upsets, not the best two team reaching the final.

If it were up to me, all 12 teams would play round 1, 6 winners go through plus either 1) 2 best losing sides or 2) 2 randomly drawn sides also go through.

Just my opinion but if everyone has a chance to be knocked out of round 1 it makes it more fair given it's such a small competition.timmymadden2011-05-08 19:54:41

Agree in principal but don't think it should be a hard and fast rule given the particular circumstannces of this season where there is a shortage of quality grounds, Tech and Westerns deferment of games etc. Only team that would have been affected was Coastal and I feel they would have agreed to play Mid Cant in the first round of the English Cup for the good of the game, mind you my experience is they can be a hard nosed self serving bunch at times!

I can see 3 of the games in this round being close and 1 being a walk over...

Apart from Universities, which senior clubs are missing here? I'm going to assume that the Pap Redwood team is the PDL one so by that logic Selwyn & Cashmere could've been in there...throw in the Canty School of footy PDL and theres a full 1st round potentially

No way should Canty School of Football (2nd worst name in town) get anywhere near cups. Not a club, nor do they fit into this heralded Whole of Football plan.

Match of the round would be FC Twenty 11 (there it goes) against Nomads.

Agree on both counts. 2011 vs Nomads will be a goodie.

Merely included the CSoF as a hypothetical 16th entity to fill slot #16. a full 16 team field would eliminate the 1st round bye set up thus making the cup completely fair and balanced.

Same story with Selwyn...my point was we have 16 entities within our region with a mens team (be it MPL, PDL or Div 1) thus it wouldn't be hard to have a 16 team league. I cant imagine the entry fee is too high?

16 team league!? the gap between 1 and 16 would be ridiculous. It's bad enough when teams play Nomads.

Excellent game between Coastal and Western's Womens Premier teams:very even encounter, and the 2-0 scoreline flattered Coastal somewhat.Stand outs were the Coastal goalie(who made a crucial save),and Western's central midfield, which Coastal struggled to control.

Chatham Cup 2nd round draw out -

FC Twenty11 v Coastal Spirit Avonhead Park
Christchurch United v Ferrymead Bays Tulett Park
Nelson Suburbs v Richmond Athletic Saxton Fields
Woolston Technical v Western Ferrymead Park
Tech v Western and Suburbs v Athletic pobably the pick of the round. FC2011 probably fancy their chances against the club that replaced them in the Premier League, Coa$tal.

The league appears more even than ever this season. Coastal seem to have the knack of winning the close ones with the benefit of havin been together for the past 2 seasons. Apart from Varsities every other team is capable of beating each other. Tech are probably the biggest dissapointment so far this year. Shame Bays and Waimak didn't enter to make a decent 8 team league.

Coastal 2 Western 1. 2-0 at halftime but was pretty close the whole game, more than likely favouring Western. (shame on me). Western could have equalised with the last kick and it just rolled past the far post. Plenty of dramarama.

Same again tomorrow 12:00 Linfield Park as the farcical English Cup kicks in, whose idea was this? Ludicrous.
Coastal got the rub of the green today with Western definitely the better team and playing the better football but as Coastal themselves have learnt through losses to Bays, United  and Western earlier in the season it's not always the best team that wins on the day. Great determination and a little bit of luck got them through. Followed on from a clinical 2-0 win over Tech in the Women's Premier League earlier on the same pitch. Awesome text book first goal from near post corner. As the game went a bit flat in the 2nd half Tech had the opportunity to get back into it but the Coastal girls stuck to it really well to close it out at the half time 2-0 score. Onwards and upwards for the club, 2 very good results.
