Press report on the Chatham Cup from the weekend -

"Bays out of race"

"Ferrymead Bays, one of Christchurch's best chances to lift the Chatham Cup, were knocked out in the first round on Saturday.

Bays lead the Mainland Football men's premiership after eight rounds, but they were pitted against the second-placed team in the premiership, Coastal Spirit, and were beaten 4-2.

Bays lead 2-1 at halftime after Canterbury United marksman Russell Kamo scored twice, but were outplayed in the second half as Ashley Wellbourn completed his match-winning hat-trick.

While the premier league leaders were knocked out, the last-placed side had a win. An Alan Fergusson hat-trick helped Western knock out Christchurch United 4-1.

Halswell and Cashmere Technical both had wins against division one sides. Halswell beat Nomads 2-0 while Cashmere Technical thumped Waimak United 6-0.

The biggest local win of the day went to FC Twenty11 who crushed Marlborough side Blenheim Rangers 7-0. Canterbury University beat Selwyn 3-1 while FC Nelson beat won their derby Wakefield 2-0."

Why does the Press always denigrate the efforts of everyone else except Bay$ or Ca$hmere? Surely the headling should have been "Spirit down cashed up Bays"? or similar. Bugger me the real headline should have been Bays spend $1000 to put that team on the park for the day and go out in the first round lol. And who decides at this stage of the competition who is best suited to lift the cup? Bay$ happened to be beaten by the side sitting equal with them on points which makes a mockery of that statement, at least there was an acknowledgement that Coastal outplayed them in the second half but who were the standout players? Average reporting, No wonder the Premier League has no profile locally, All you get is the goal scorers and yet again no byline. Is this info coming from one or two amateur sideline reporters with no-one actually present at the game? When Coastal went top of the league after defeating Nelson the next item in the Press was all about Tech losing league lead, no mention who to. That article didn't even list Coastal amongst the teams who make up the league, went straight from Tech to Halswell, same on the match day coverage on Radio Sport. It is not good enough for a code that plays a major part in the sporting fabric of this City. Way short of what should have been printed. It is barely a token effort from the rugby loving wankers at the Press. Only brigh spot was David Cox's radio report on Saturdays game. Rant over.
