over the next month or so there's games being played between the teams that have byes in each comp so I guess once they've been played it will give a clearer picture if a combined comp will be of any benefit

Scousekiwi is unarguably one of the most knowledgeable followers of the womens game in this country. He's spot on with his assessment of an URGENT need for a SI Womens League. I'd go so far as to bring it into play this season - after 2 rounds of the Mainland WPL.

If I'm reading Tech Speaking's argument correctly - that we should hold back the development of the current best players in the South Island (who want to  compete for national honours) by making them play more ridiculous games - it is short sighted. We need to create the right competition for these players now; or lose them.

The current reserve grade teams of Cashmere and Coastal will be competitive against the other 4-5 WPL sides (Uni, FC, Waimak, Parklands). Cashmere reserves win games by more than 10 goals more often than not. If the youngsters from Waimak, Selwyn, FC or wherever keep developing then they can prove themselves at the Chch WPL level. If they are good enough, they can strive further, and push on to win promotion to SI WPL.

This approach means the game is accommodating the development of ALL players, and holding none back. Action needs to happen now. If not, the best will leave. Simple.

not suggesting we hold back the best players at all. In previous posts I have said their needs to be alternative training and playing options for the top players.

I am doubtful a South Island league for a whole season is viable. Tasman are already playing double headers with bye weekends just to get to play in Chch.  I also wonder if Dunedin teams are "that" good. Hope we see.

My point is that young players only get better playing against better players. Fctwenty now playing their 15 girls in boys league. As did Waimak last year.  And best individuals do seek out tougher options.  Longo has trained with men/Canty youth. Esson has played v men. Young Fraser playing boys too??  I think to improve the league as a whole the young players need to keep competing against the best. I am concerned taking the top teams out on a regular basis will stall this.  However extra games v tougher opposition is a great idea, similar to FTC game days.

Cashmere Reserves results: 11-1, 12-0, 4-0,15-0, 5-3 (v Coastal), 12-0, 7-1. This team needs to play a higher division.

yes lets widen the gap even further. Those good young players coming thru at fctwenty and Waimak can go and play for cash tech and make the league below even weaker!!

I would suggest FC, Waimak, Tasman with their young players coming thru are on the brink of developing competitive teams. Why ruin that? As I understand it FC have a terrific 15th grade team (seniors next season?) and Waimak have another crop on the brink.  Clearly the best players are drawn to the highest league. Create a higher league and suddenly you destroy all the work those clubs have done to become competitive in the league.

IMO one of the problems that a lot of clubs don't address is  that as a women/girl  goes through Puberty / leaves school (about a 5 year time frame ) their performance will drop . They have to work so much harder to maintain their skill and fitness levels . But if they do work hard and are also nurtured the right way they will come out the otherside fitter, faster and more skilled than before and hopefully go on to enjoy the best football of there lifes for many years to come . One of my pet hates is hearing how amazing a 13 or 14 year old is, then 2 years later that same player is not even playing - due to another so called amazing 13 or 14 year old taking her place , and so the cycle continues . Male and female sports are completely different beasts (even more so in these transition years) .Want to know how to get this balance right then maybe the answer is right in front of our noses. Whatever Coastal are doing they are getting it right . the likes of proctor , cameron and Jones, keep getting better with age . On the flip side some of the older players at the bottom of the league are only a shadow of what they used to be. As I stated earlier this is just an opinion but I have to give Turnbull,Gunn and everybody involved  under them a big tick for getting it right.

We'll find out how good the Dunedin sides are in a few weeks time as they meet Chch sides in Timaru for a few games.

Even worse! 2 teams playing twice in 3 days while another team (in just a 7 team league) has no game at all. And Taswomen playing 2 games in less than 24 hours - player welfare anyone? This season has been well and truly McManned. How is that Selwyn PDL team doing playing the team with the bye each week? Is that working out OK?

Even better- I heard that Fc Prems only had 13 players last weekend in Nelson and their PDL team could only field 10 players . How does a club pick up 9 prem players from another club (Selwyn) as well as at least a couple more from western , yet find themselves short of players. If my source is incorrect can someone from FC please correct this mistake.

Sounds like Waimak in the men's section who forfeited their game last week in the reserves at half time because 2 of their players had to sit on the bench (and not even come on) for the 1st team!

I get sitting on the bench for the 1st team as cover.  I don't get not having enough players in a reserve squad that you have to forfeit a game (pull them up from lower div again)  But to do it half way through a game?  That just pisses off everyone - especially last Saturday in that weather.

I promised myself at the beginning of the year I would watch more WPL however this season it's not really worth it huh?  Half the time my team doesn't play, and when they do it's a thumping.

Only 3 or 4 real games of interest this year.

Boo.

Parklands have defaulted Saturday game v CTFC in the WPDL

Not sure why however 21 point and 100 goal gap after 7 rounds means any reason applies?

No longer relevant as all games but WPL and MPL are canned.

Guess taking a 3-0 loss by defaulting and staying dry in front of the fire is preferable to a drubbing!

At least Waimak fronts at games!

Another 1 sided game although Tasman did well till half time. Maybe 2 games in 2 days caught up with them? Just an idea to put out there and other don't know if it could work or not. Women's SI league mooted as a possibility but rest of SI may not be strong enough and cost factors would come into it. Is there any scope of thought in putting Cash Tech and Coastal women's teams into say a senior men's division? Have seen it with FC u15 girls into u14 div2 boys. Obviously quite a different scenario here with senior women and men but maybe an idea and then have other teams amongst each other for next few years to get base and strength of the rest raised. Don't know which league, maybe CCL or Div1. That part I really don't know not having seen them play with Selwyn not having the WMPL side this yr. Could the idea work?

Yes would be great if the looked at kicking the WPL game of say at 12:15pm to allow for supporters and others to then head off to see the start of the MPL game, going to be a big day for both Coastal and Technical.
