One thing I would say  is that I've felt a real lack of consistency across the board. I accept that referees, like players, have their own strengths and weaknesses. But having played as high as Capital 1 and as low as 15, I think there could be more consistency, especially where cards are concerned.

I have played in really rough games, with studs up challenges every 50/50 ball and no cards issued. I have played in the most relaxed social game, in Cap 5-6, where a timid sliding tackle was sanctioned with a red. I have seen elbows and punches thrown, with no action taken. And I have seen players sent off for shouting "It was't off-side".

I really don't envy refs, and I admire them for giving up their time (often copping abuse and threats in the process) so that we can play the game. But I think more could be done (by CF? More training? I admit I don't know the process used to coach referees presently) to have more uniform standards of refereeing.

Edit.

The referees do meet and have training, go over videos and rules. But what you do find is it is the same people each week, not every referee that does a game on Saturday turns up to the training on Tuesday nights (That anybody is welcome to come too).

Because you will never have the luxury of saying you can't referee if you don't do the training/fitness tests etc due to lack of numbers and people do have other commitments, the guys are really just doing the best they can.
