I've heard through the grapevine that Royals have informed NZF that they're pulling their Womens team out of the NL this year because they don't believe their squad is competitive enough, so Otago Uni will be taking their place. If this is true then it's certainly an interesting decision to say the least... Will you stay out of next years national league too? And even if you don't think they're competitive enough, robbing them of the chance to play the best in the country doesn't seem like the best call, but to each their own.

I'm not too sure Otago Uni can participate, as they may not hold a National League License due to the fact of " Article 22: Sporting Criteria " aka Youth Teams, TDP, Skill hubs, etc. Unless they hold a MOU with a local club that deals with it, kind of like with Coastal and Ferrymead with Ōtākaro.

What I believe is that that is why the Men's team was pulled from the 2022 Southern League due to not meeting that requirement, unless it was them unable to provide a Qualified Head Coach, like Uni of Canterbury this year.

So I think we may see a Southern United back?

I don't know about TDP or Skill Hubs, but they run a youth system by working with Grants Braes. Basically they have some of their lower league guys coach Grant Braes kids, otherwise I'm pretty sure they'd be kicked out of SPL and even Otago Div 1.

Also the source I've heard this from is someone I consider pretty trustworthy. Time will tell of course.

There should be somebody able to recognise why a University team doesn't have an academy and grant them an exception.

In saying that I have heard about the association with Grants Braes, which from I thought was to help them stay in the Southern League, but could have been so they could get back up.

Be a shame if Royals had to pull out, they've had a great women's side for a while now (even back to Dunedin Tech days I believe) and it would be fun to have a Dunedin side in the top flight.

I think NZ Football have stated it is a club based National League, so unlikely would allow a Southern United, Canterbury United Pride, etc.

I suspect you want to double check your source. 2026 should be Football South, 2027 should be DCR.

JR report https://www.ultimatenzsoccer.com/Scoreboard/3008264d0.htm has OU in, DCR out for WNL in 2026 as well as Cashmere and not Canterbury so must be something to it.

How can there be confusion about this? Which is it?

One would assume Southern Football are putting some $$$ into the pot to assist Otago University with costs.

Confusion is arising because publicly available regulations say one thing, section 12.3 of https://www.nzfootball.co.nz/asset/downloadasset?id=bff86a2b-0008-4d25-9d0c-37f7cfe2495f ...

12.3 Subject to regulations 12.2, 12.3.1 and 12.4, there shall be a total of ten (10) Participants in the Competition season and each Participant shall enter one team in the Competition (each a “Participant”). The Participants shall be as follows:
12.3.1 Top four (4) placed Clubs (each being a Participant) from the NRFL;
12.3.2 Wellington Phoenix FC;
12.3.3 Central Football Federation;
12.3.4 Capital Football Federation Team One;
12.3.5 Capital Football Federation Team Two;
12.3.6 Mainland Football Federation; and
12.3.7 Southern Football Federation
12.4 In the event of any Participant not continuing in the Competition for whatever reason, including failing to meet the NZF criteria, resulting in their removal from the Competition, then the filling of the consequential vacancy shall be determined by NZF, which may in its sole discretion choose not to fill the vacancy.

... and reality are proving to be different.

Perhaps Mainland and Southern followed Centrals league and pulled out, and NZF allocated the spots to CT and DCR respectively and in turn now to OU.  Whatever occurred, I don't see any announcements, posts etc.

The OU facebook post begs the question, can Auckland and Wellington teams transfer in players from outside of their squads??

There has always been a bit of scope there for a handful with CF links. Maybe even Central now they are gone perhaps (prob not though)

For NRFL sides, from their squad as of 30th June, they have always been able to
a) add 3 guest players as long as they were under 20, or if they were over 20 weren't from the non-qualified NRFL sides (Ellerslie, Western Springs, Melville, Tauranga).  Hence you may see Northern Conference players being added but not NRFL players.
b) one extra player from anywhere for every player they lose to a professional contract.  So because Zoe Benson played a handful of games for AU in-between Phoenix stints, AU can sign an extra guest player and they can be from Ellerslie, Western Springs, Melville, Tauranga.

For the Federation sides (Central, Capital, Mainland, Southern), they have until Sep 25 to finalize squads so I think the Petone players can play for either of the two Wellington sides.  When Southern made the final a few years ago, they had 3 West Coast Rangers (who finished 5th in the NRFL that year) in their squad.  Not sure how the finances for that worked.
