The dilemma is whether you build a giant national stadium to replace eden park or a more fit for purpose 25k stadium for club rugby and football. I'd prefer the latter, but this is NZ.

dont forget cricket, Eden park is still used for international games, so a new stadium would probably need to cater for football, rugby, league and cricket, unless you want multiple stadia?

Any new Waterfront stadium would need Govt and Auckland Council support. That means Auckland Council working out a solution for all it's stadiums and sport as a group. Council has been debating this already now for a number of years.

A redeveloped Western Springs has been suggested as a new home for Auckland cricket. Blind Freddie can see it would be a huge mistake to make any new Auckland stadium a fixed oval okay the ROF. However retractable pitches again aka like BC Place, that bring the lower tiers in closer to the action creating a sideline rectangle feel, maybe a solution. That might mean you have a big enough oval for cricket ODIs/T20s when those retractable seats are pushed back. EP doesn't host test cricket any longer. I guess the Canucks don't have to deal with the problem of cricket. They don't really even play baseball.
