I don't get the whole Black Knights thing. What affiliation does Auckland have to the colour black? And the connection to knights? It's a plain stupid idea. It's not even a traditional football specific name. Maybe for an ice hockey team but not football in 2024
Just possibly if you had $20mill to buy a new football franchise you'd probably choose to name it the way you liked. Basically Foley's got carte blanche to call the club whatever name he wants.
Ps My first "club", at Ngaio School a few years ago, was called The Lazy Loafers Club. It was a great success. Well, I thought so.
If I had 20 million I'd get my market research right, what connections there are locally, look around the world and see what's worked and what hasn't. I certainly wouldn't pick a name that only meant something to me.
Let's hope they get it right. Don't think the league can take too many more failures - and "knights" already featured in one of those.
