Also wasn't the story that Hay broke covid quarantine during the World Cup play-off and gave Rojas covid causing him to miss the game.

Unless it's maybe your life partner (and even then), how can you get Covid and be certain you got it from Person X? The rumour that Hay said or did something offensive, to female coaches at NZF I'd give more credence.
