Curious about the name the port, the team has nothing to do with a port, having a port isn't unique to Auckland, it's not particularly associated with Auckland, Auckland is not even the main port in the country.
You get one chance to name your fan group, yellow fever isn't particularly amazing, and I'd imagine if it was created now the name would be different, but at least it references the city and team colours.

(More seriously: you could argue for a billion years about a name. This one is short and easy to remember.)
