Surely attendances are always based upon tickets sold?


No usually it's based on actual attendance. That's why you regularly have sold out events whose attendance number is a bit lower than the full capacity. 

Also why usually it's mid 2nd half before attendance is announced as they wait for as many tickets to be scanned as possible before the number is released

Edit: The Warriors last season is a good example - every home game was a sellout but the attendance numbers vary game to game
