I've never been a fan of Woud personally, but I think he's been serviceable in the A-League up until the last couple of games where mistakes have cost them 3 points - He should have come for that ball v City that lead to them taking the lead, and any keeper worth his salt would have cleaned up that cross into the near post yesterday, regardless of the fairly average conditions down that end of the Mt Smart pitch.
I said at the start of the season that the goalkeeping situation up north will cost them points, and although it's taken a while for it to all unfold, the couple of mistakes + the teams recent form (5 points from 15 now) heavily amplifies the scrutiny on Woud's position between the sticks from here on out.
Do I think Sail is the answer? Not necessarily, given his tendencies to produce some absolutely whopping howlers as well, but they're almost backed into a corner here given how the past couple of weeks have played out.
The Paulsen effect is in full swing here too - We suffered it after he left us in Wellington - whereby every keeper that pulls on that #1 shirt after him will be scrutinized, analyzed and even villainized as though he were AP himself. This is perhaps a little unfair to those coming in after him given Paulsen was a generational keeper in this league, and by far and away several levels ahead of where Woud or Sail will ever reach. But in the end it doesn't matter which of the two will be in goal for the next match or beyond, whether it's Woud or now possibly Sail - The increased level of scrutiny will linger over whoever gets the gloves.
Good luck to whoever it is having to deal with that comparison, and then having to go out and uphold that expected level of quality week in, week out. 😬
