Can I ask why so many people hate Auckland FC?
Seems like if Bill Foley was a left wing loser it would be all good.
No wonder the nix is a bunch of losers.
I think for a lot of people, Bill Foley and the other owners' politics don't even factor into their dislike of the club. I think it's more the arrogance of many involved with the club - the Mowbrays, Becker, Corica and some of the players - and the club's culture at large.
For me it started when when they did that pitch invader stunt at the nix game in Auckland in 2024. This was from before they sold their kits so it would have had to have been someone involved with / being paid by the club. There were plenty of other publicity stunts that they could have done that didn't involve disrupting a game and breaking the rules. It rubbed me the wrong way, especially with how the league seemed to be fine with it.
In one of last season's derbies in Auckland some of the fans blocked the Wellington team bus which just doesn't seem that funny to me. The club didn't seem to really care about that.
They also preempted the change in the league rules that allowed them to loan Paulsen. I honestly have no problems with them using a rule that most a-league clubs voted for, but they could have waited until after the league had announced the changes which would have made them look less like they don't care about the league's rules.
The nickname of Black Knights rubs me the wrong way and if I was an aucklander I'd feel pretty annoyed that my club's nickname has nothing to do with my city or club, and is just based off the Military Academy the owner went to.
Also this season at their awards night they awarded the two players who got red cards in the first derby an award for moment of the season - their team holding on to the result with 9 players. Surely players shouldn't be rewarded for getting sent off (regardless of how unjust the club feels the decisions were). By all means pick that as moment of the season but give it to the players in the team that actually held on with 9.
If creating a club culture that's filled with unpleasant people is the only way to win anything I would honestly rather we didn't win anything.
I firmly believe that clubs can and do win things without having to be annoying and arrogant, like newcastle jets men this season and ccm men in 23-24.
I think the nix have definitely had their share of issues (the club should have just not said anything on the chelsea women's game and the ofc pro league team decisions) but it seems to be less ingrained in the club culture.
Basically if Auckland had likeable people involved and wasn't constantly making decisions that made them look bad, I would probably like them more.
