Can’t be bothered going back and finding comments about how having Auckland and Southern and not the Nix was going to be a revelation of growing the game across the Islands.
Rrrright. So the money that goes to the OFC is actually going directly from the Saudis to Auckland FC. There’s no FIFA or OFC in the middle. Not even the biggest conspiracy theorists are suggesting the Westpoint nicknamed Black Knights are receiving Saudi funding for their work in the Pacific. OFC has a clear history of not allowing Australian clubs in. They chose to allow Auckland FC. Surely they get to choose how to allocate their funding from FIFA? Not giving it Auckland FC was an option.
And higher house prices mean higher household incomes required to service them usually. Surely not even you’re going to want to move Auckland FC to Wellington because the economics would be better. Auckland is the most attractive football market in the country, with greater commercial opportunities, without factors like a Lowy-esque benefactor elsewhere being considered.
It’s not a charity case: two professional clubs folded and left a PR nightmare around professional football in Auckland that the Nix turned around. Two clubs were terrible (eventually) and made no money. The Nix were entertaining and revived the market. There was a history of well-attended pro football in the city ready for an Auckland club.
So Auckland FC gets the continental tournament money that formerly went to the Central lot. They have 3 extremely wealthy owners, whether Anna Mowbray merely having $500 million makes her poverty extreme or not. You get the extra game time for fringe players, helping your title run, especially when you were crap before the finals series and Gillion could come in with matches under his belt.
And for years there was an anti-Nix thing and an anti- Aussie team thing and there was no way we could be involved in representing the Confederation, as its only professional club. Now all your A league contracted players can play hookey-cookey between two confederations at will.
And finding this irritating is BS apparently. 500k is a decent hit if the hard salary cap is 3 mill. Bet MacArthur wouldn’t mind it.
