Can we all just stop goal counting all the time.
With the likes of Roly, Sarpong, Weemac, Krishna (gonna be much better than last season) A-Rod, Riera, and then Powell and Fenton in our midfield and attack we're gonna have a large amount of goals. I will be surprised if we do not score more than last season. Anyone can score a goal when given a good enough chance.
Seriously look at these players... Roly, Sarpong, Weemac, Krishna, A-Rod, Riera. I think all these 6 are going to be very good this season. We will be competitive and I believe we can have a shot for the top
Agree with that. I think simply comparing Burns and Sarpong's goalscoring records is a little reductive. Even if Jeffrey doesn't score 10+ goals he looks completely capable of scoring at least 5 or 6 while also getting goals out of others. If he sets someone like Appiah or Powell up for 10 tap ins next year then we will still be looking good. We should definitely be looking for goals out of our midfield though. Roly, McG, A-Rod and Fenton can all score more goals from the right positions.
My issue is that we have replaced Burns but as far as I can tell we haven't replaced Griffiths. Sure we only had him for a few games but Ernie obviously saw something that a player like him could bring to the club. As I said earlier other teams worked out that defending deep and narrow meant we couldn't get our attackers in the sort of areas they needed to score goals.
Our form dropped off drastically at the end of lasts season partly because of this I think. I'm sure Ernie is aware of this and has plans, but from the outside looking in, we only have the players to attack the way we did last year. Maybe someone who's been to a few of the preseason games can reassure me about this!
I think playing the top 2 teams 3 times in the last 5 games had something to do with this. Also Griffiths wasn't even in the team when we were arguably playing our best football, and he only scored 1 in 5 games, so I'm not sure he is really a player that needs 'replacing'
Again, its not about goals scored but the shape of the team and the way we attack. We played our best football when teams hadn't got used to the idea of us having quick tricky strikers who we're getting behind their defensive lines. IIRC at the end of last season Ernie talked about bringing in a new striker who could play more of a traditional no 9 role if needed.
Edit: Sorry, got my stats wrong. . But still, we definitely found it harder to break teams down after the Christmas/ Asian Cup period
