I’ll always love another NZ player taking an Australian’s spot, but it does strike as odd. His old man played in Australia, maybe his mother is an Aussie or similar so he has Australian citizenship, similar to how none of us knew Sail had AU citizenship either. On McGarry’s side, why not try new pastures with a potential World Cup later in the year.
This article from a few years back when he signed with Willem II said he had an Irish passport. Maybe they meant Australian.

"Willem II has strengthened with James McGarry. The 20-year-old left back from New Zealand has been training with the Tricolores since Saturday. He signs a contract for two seasons. In addition, the club has an option to extend the contract with two seasons. McGarry already passed the medical examination and the formalities were completed this morning.
Wellington Phoenix McGarry, who also has an Irish passport, transfers transference from Wellington Phoenix, an Australian club that plays in the Australian A-league and where McGarry has been playing since 2014. In 2016 he played for the first half of the season for Wellingon United, after which he returned to Wellington Phoenix.
He could have both. I have kiwi and British passports and if I have children they will have Kiwi, Iranian and British ones.
I'm sure James sees himself as a kiwi but good on him for cashing in on other passports if he has them. If he does go, I hope used used up front as I thik he's a winger not a wing back. The more kiwis getting game time in the A Legaue the better.
