I just don't understand how people could already oppose something when the dust hasn't even settled in a proposal?
Has it been that long since you were last in NZ?
This
From the "Don't Wreck our Petone Rec" Group
"The new proposed stadium on Petone Rec is being bulldozed ahead without any consultation with local residents and sports clubs..,..,.,we have to act now!"
JD this is the reality in this city we love so much. The nimby brigade shut down just about everything before it gets going. Its no wonder that Wellington economically is falling well behind other NZ cities. Retail sales in Wellington were down by a huge 6.8% last year. The President of Wellington Employers Chamber of Commerce urged the Wellington City Council to "think wisely, plan boldly and act swiftly"
The new stadium will push nearly $50 million into the local economy in construction costs....there will be jobs created in admin, security, cleaning, ground staff etc etc. The local retail hospitality area will get a huge boost. Apart from the Nix and other sporting clubs the ground will be multi use e.g for other activities like Opera in the park.
But the reality is that this development will be opposed by a great many. Why! because all the benefits are overshadowed by personal selfishness. These people think the inconvenience of having their daily routine upset by cars and people and noise and floodlights for 10 to 15 times a year for 3 or 4 hours each time far outweighs any value to the greater community.
As an aside the former 2.5 hectare ex NZ post site is up for sale on the Petone waterfront. As its buried right in the middle of an industrial area you would think it would be less of a nimby problem. Real close to the Petone railway station as well.
This has been a party political broadcast of the anti-NIMBYs business lobby.
There are some great potential economic benefits. Some outstanding potential sporting/football benefits. But there are also some potentially legitimate negatives - crowd control, loss of green space, and direct impact on adjacent residents.
I don't have a problem with an advocacy group giving voice to the negatively affected.
Perhaps the issue is that those of us in favour of it are too lazy.
