My own uneducated theory is that of working for a second class outfit:

- If you are good but slightly lazy, they will keep you even if you don't pull your weight, 'cause they're afraid you'll go somewhere better. 

- If you're motivated but not very talented they'll keep you because you're cheap and nobody else wants you. 

- If you're not very motivated and not very talented you will get a season's wages or more if you do not need a working visa.
