Former Sydney FC midfielder Sam McIllhatton has been training with the Phoenix throughout pre-season and could be offered an emergency contract, but Talay did not rule out sending an SOS to the Wellington-based reserve team ahead of next week’s clash against Western Sydney Wanderers to bolster his squad.
Ball will also miss the next game after being slapped with an automatic one-game suspension, opening the door for promising New Zealand under-20 international Ben Waine to get a rare start in the A-League.
“It’s pretty easy to get those guys over because there’s no quarantine in New South Wales if you’re coming from New Zealand so if we need to bring players we’ll bring players over,” he said.
“But first we’ll make an assessment of where everyone is at and we’ll go from there.
“We’ve still got Mirza who can play as a No. 9, Ben Waine who can play as a No. 9 and Ulises played as a No. 9 today, so we’ve got a few options there that we if need to use them, we can use them.”
