Fears behind the Racing cheers
For fans of Racing Santander, the lowly Spanish soccer team, there hasn't been much to cheer about in the past few years.
This tiny club from the north of the country was playing in the second division a decade ago, has achieved a top-10 finish in Spain's top professional league just three times in the past 50 years, and hasn't won a major trophy in its entire 98-year history.
But when Ahsan Ali Syed bought a controlling stake in the team in January, things finally seemed to be looking up. The Indian entrepreneur, who says his fortune is worth more than $12 billion, promised to transform the perennial struggler by paying off the club's 20 million ($28.1 million) debts and assembling a roster capable of competing against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
