It's a tricky one IMO. Having a professional team in NZ is extremely important. It would have been much less likely for us to make it to the world cup without the phoenix, and that was of course worth much, much more to NZ football than they have put back into the Phoenix. I'm not sure how much they pay the Phoenix, I understand they contribute a lump sum and in return they don't pay Ricki, but have him coach the NZ team. How this is a costed is completely up to the Phoenix accountant. I'm guessing the amount would be between 100 and 200k pa.
Ideally the player levy should be abolished. We want as many kids playing the sport as possible. Anyone know how much it is for each kid at the moment? But they need to get their revenue sorted from other things like sponsorship. Making the next world cup again would be huge.
NZ football also helped out with the reserve team last year. Again not sure exactly how the costs were met but they did contribute.
