Can we at least agree that we're doomed?
Focusing on the football aspect, Morgan has come out and said the future of the club is youth development and we have been crying out for that for ages so they have pinned their colours to the mast in thats the way of the future. Good on them and I endorse that. The operative word however, is 'future'. Thats why its confoundingly stupid to be talking about the product on field 'now' when the club is geared/gearing for the 'future'.
Objectively, we are sitting under Downey, Pav (and there will be costs) Pantellis, Lindsay, and other footballers whom can be debated about as to whether they provide any worth to the club. Put in 4 different footballers that fit this 'total football' mumbo jumbo thats been bandied about by Morgan, and we could well be in a different situation. I also think that if they had a crystal ball as to the performance of Ifill, Smith (and we will see on Sanchez) Totori, they may well not have been signed those 4 for this year because Ifill is well off his level, Smith is ok but not import quality and Totori is embarrassing. If Sanchez is used in his wide role of last year, he'll probably be an import liability as well so I think from a recruiting aspect, its easy to identify that the cattle is not there to play this brand of football that Morgan wants that will magically win the league, fill the stadium (ask how thats going in Brisband) generate fans, play champagne football, cure AIDS, heal the lame.... Thats just naivity from the owner and Davie Dome might do well to take him aside and remind him that he is the CEO that is employed to get the club running according to their wishes.
The fans aspect, its hard to engage when they talk about taking games away. When you have a successful scholarship scheme (and it could produce bums for eternity - its a success in finding Marco) and choose not to have in interest in it (you can say YF pulled it but if the owners aren't interested, you don't have a choice) then thats another disengagement. The poster boy of the AWs is Ryan Nelsen - who is the poster boy of the Phoenix? They don't have one that the fans relate to. Where is the engagement? If its recognised that fans are bums on seats and pay the bills, why disengage them with this shark we are hearing from Gareth (because frankly, its is shark)? Please. Someone. Explain. This.
Here is how this all should have gone down.
Gareth/Rob/ Board should have gone to David as the CEO and said 'This is our vision. This is what we want. Your performance and position will be evaluated on this. Now go and do it.' David could then talk with the coaching staff and put in place systems to arrive at what the owners want. If they fundamentally believe that the product on the pitch is directly related to bums on seats then you talk with the coaching staff about moving to that direction. When the Warriors were rank awful and buried under some awful contracts from the Ian Robson era, it took time to get out from those to actually build a decent club. We have shed some but we probably have another 4-5 to that could go and be replaced by players that could potentially push for first team. If Downey, Lindsay and Pantellis (injured ok) were going to do that, they would have done so by now being at the club for 18 months'. How long has it taken the Warriors to develop their farm system? As last year showed, its not always the guaranteed win. Wayne Scurrah has been given the mandate to put in place the owners vision. I bet if he does not do that, he'll be gone.
I just see a stupid owner opening his mouth and you can call is scaremongering or panicing or whatever you like - the problem will not be fixed this season I think until we can recruit towards what the owners want. Its not doom, its just reality because the players we have now, dictate the system we play, dictate the way we play, dictate the results, dictate the appeal of the product on the field and dictate the engagement of the fans (does that help you how it should work Gareth?)
