DM is probably the position on the pitch that requires the LEAST amount of pace (aside from GK). Have a look at Claude Makelele sometime. He's a slow plodder, but has loads of stamina and the key to his game is his ability to read the flow of the match, the angles that the opposition pass the ball and the timing to close down an opponent at just the right time.
