To me, there is a difference to how you play if you have the cover of a wide midfielder who is supposed to come in and offer protection down the side when on defence. If an opposition side attack with two wide players and two forwards a three man defence is over-powered.
Rees was a Centre Back, one of three as opposed to a true Right back who's role is to defend but also get forward and create attacking options. It's the reason why Rees is tall, built like a brick-sh*thouse and slow, whereas Mulligan is kind of short, and supposedly nippier.
