It seems to me like Hartlepool just used the option to make sure they got some money out of Porter, either through a transfer fee or Porter buying out his contract himself.
Not sure about that CriticalLemon. They could probably guess a transfer would likely kill the deal so they probably do genuinely want him to stay. If he is as good as some people on this forum are saying then why would they want to let him go?
