And also, the main problems that we had last year (conceding too many anmd struggling to score) are EXACTLY the same this year.

Also whomever decided to recruit a foreign attacking midfielder (Finkler) in the exact same position as our best forign player (Bonevacia) but then kept him on the books is a complete idiot.  That has to go down as one of the great Pheonix transfer fudge ups.

ALso, does anyone find it odd that Finkler has been allowed to miss 4 matches this season to go and see his wife and kid in Brazil?  He's employed to pay football in Wellington and I suspect very well paid.  Seriously, if you choose not to bring your family to NZ why should you get time off in the middle of the season to head home.  Pisstake.

Bonevacia came to the club as a DM and a defensive player in his youth. On paper he seems like a player with quite a range. I imagine they thought he would be able to play in a range of positions throughout the midfield and that there would be a pre-season to figure it out. Roly was completely unable to play deeper. Competition for places should be good for a squad with a strong culture.

We're still down on the squad of our top team- missing Burns, missing Riera and McG has been injured most of the season. Smeltz has given us a bit of a spark- but we are still trying to replace players we lost. Kosta < Burns, Tratt< Boxall. The heart and fight that Siggie brought hasn't been replaced at all.

I understand Finkler's wife went home after the earthquakes, when Bonevacia's family went to Sydney. Who knows what the situation was around his absence?

When we signed Finkler we had WeeMac, Roly, Riera, A-Rod, Lia, Ridenton, and Rufer and only one specialist fullback and 2 specialist CBs in the squad. There's no way spending (presumably) decent coin and an import spot on another (unversatile) central midfielder was a good decision

And Rossi quite a way along presumably. I'd also assume we weren't doing nothing about FBs, but just that it is very very difficult to coax good Australian FBs to NZ. Our best have either been Kiwi or like Manny and Tratty have come from obscurity.

IIRC one complaint last was set pieces and that we didn't create enough

In some other universe Finkler might have solved some of these problems. In fact of those players we had WeeMac, Roly and Finkler as possibles for a number 10. WeeMac was at his best for CCM out on the left and Roly may have been thought of as a midfielder, not exclusively a number 10.

I'm trying to explain, not defend. At the time it seemed like we were assembling a very strong attacking squad and this was adding depth- especially with McG/Kosta out for the AWs and Roy out for Fiji etc etc.

I also strongly doubt that anyone thought that Lia would be one of our best and most reliable midfielders this season, but had in mind him and Riera to be phased out by the younger lads.
