Well you can't just expect amateurs to perform, it took Roy a couple of years of development to get to where he is now. That's why you need academies. 

According to Sigmund Ricki also had no time to actually coach players so of course he didn't like amateurs. 

We're never going to outspend the big teams, our only path to success is to exploit our own unique resources and that means developing local talent.

One of the assets that a new Phoenix coach would need is a history of developing players and working with raw talent. That's the one box that Kewell ticks, but fortunately plenty of other coaches also tick that box (including Des).
