I am old enough to remember a Melbourne Victory game where young Robbie Kruse was getting persistently fouled by the opposition (he was as slightly built as Ishige then).  After a fourth or fifth crunching tackle by the same opposition midfielder that left Kruse on the ground in agony, I recall the captain (Kevin Muscat) eventually fouling the offending party once and well.  
Yes, he got a red card for it, but Kruse lived on to play another day.  Protection of young players by the referees is I think a bit different these days, and thankfully so.
