Maybe the point is that we do not "spend with our heart", we sensibly "spend with our brain".  People leaving at the end of their contract for a better offer (who might have stayed if we paid over the odds) simply means the owners likely said "that's fine, but this is how much the DoF and coach can spend next season so take it from there" despite our bellyaching.  The upshot is that we live within our means.
