Conceding two goals are a bit worrying. I guess thats the style they play. But they shouldnt of allowed the first goal to happen. But Im sure their attack will get them home in the end.

I don't think there gonna make it, Solomon Islands played there reserve side and still nailed two goals easy. We already missed one Olympics wont hurt to miss another.

I like what Des had to say afterwards, that they are playing to their game plan, and not playing the kind of football played in the islands in years gone by. The risks are there but let's not underestimate how hard it is there, in the heat and often questionable officiating. A former All white who played there said to me it was as hard as anything he did in the jumper. Credit to the Solomons for a furiously energetic and spirited performance, some of their ball skill is amazing to watch. the first goal was awful that we conceded, but the second was a very good strike, after tying Billingsley in knots. They managed to get numbers onto us every time we had the ball and it almost works, but patience and good play got us home.

Interesting if that was the Solomon Islands' reserve side, when nine of the 11 starters were starting for the third match in a row...

Would hate to see what their first XI could do.

The key stat is that we scored 4 to their 2 plus their last goal was great and made the game exciting, but the U23s responded by putting the game to bed with a well-worked 4th goal. As stated earlier - Island games are tough encounters with many variables - including the officials. I think the soft free kicks evened up as the game progressed. (Opinion only)

The Solomon Islands team played a great pressing game in the first half and forced us back to long balls, but they dropped off the pressure in the second half - and no wonder - it takes more than a Hudson power-point to run all game.

I enjoyed the way the team came back under pressure - hopefully it will be an NZ v Solomons re-match in the final.

PS - I was impressed with some of the Samoan skills too - we need academies to keep going in the Rua and South Auckland, there is so much talent there.

Looking really busy, we should be up by more but had an open goal skied by Logan Regerson and another opportunity missed by Myer Bevan in front of goal.

Cacace picked up a yellow before half time. He was sitting on a yellow from a pool game, so might be missing the final if cards were not wiped after the pool stage?

Nope, he is fine. Yellows got wiped after the pool stage. A yellow in the final would mean he is suspended for the first game at Tokyo tho (assuming we make it)

Never agreed with wiping yellows at end of group stage/ r-o16 midpoint of season etc, . I'd be much more in favour of a rolling game drop off..  kind of like driving demerit points.  X games after you get it it wipes, but if you pick up a second (5th for leagues) before that point you get your ban. Reward extended good behaviour.

Always seemed silly you get a card in 2nd and 3rd game you get a ban, but if you get them in 3rd and 4th you don't. Offence is the same, punishment ain't

But so many yellow cards are so frivolous...I think only red cards should be worthy of extra game suspensions

Des has shown us all how important it is to prepare our national teams properly.

I think most of us would agree that since 2010 our national teams have performed at a standard that is less than the sum of it's parts. We saw a brief example of what is possible under Emblen. Now Des is showing what is possible with the players we have.

Furthermore, Des is also proving that a progressive playing style is effective no matter who or where we are playing.

Against high reputation nations at the under 20 World Cup, we played progressive football. In the islands, where many have suggested in the past that hoof ball was necessary because of the conditions (WTF), we have played in the same manner, although with an appropriate level of physical restraint, given the timetable and heat.

I define Anthony Hudson's tenure as being condescending. His all too apparent lack of faith in our ability and criticism of our mentality, which culminated in the most archaic of tactics ever seen from a coach in pointy shoes. Choosing archaic tactics was one thing, but not having the ability to implement them effectively made it all much worse.
