No Futa Nakamura, Cory Mitchell or Aaron Spain at the season opening over the weekend?

Futa flew out from Christchurch early in our wider season currently playing in India, both Cory and Aaron in the squad, sounds like Aaron flew in from Australia during the week.

Think it's basically this. Maybe a couple of other NYL-age players in the senior mix.

Tracey/Ashton/Gordon

Schwarz/Terris/Wilson/Cox/Liddicoat/Messenger/Spain

Matthysen/Hoyle/Kowal/Thurston

Both Spain's Aaron and younger brother Jordan, sadly Bryon Heath out for the summer with a break which happened in Secondary Schools tournament.

Matt Thomas from Coastal and Eddie Ashton from FC2011 are in the squad I believe.

If only Hickok was still about. Surely those 2 aren't up to National League standard. I believe Lew Gordon is in the squad as well.

Ouch. I'll pass on your support.

The first player Willy got in touch with [a few months ago] for the starting position wearing the Number One shirt played the full winter season in midfield.

I think that shows when you want a midfielder for GK how much Willy thought of the other goalkeepers playing MPL or what.

Matt had around 10 games in goal for Coastal this season once James Hickok returned to the USA, which was in late June so all the Southern League gamrs and a couple of English Cup games.

Just thought I'd add, James Bannatyne played a lot of his football as a striker. He was a pretty good one too.  He was also a damn good  lock forward, but that's a different story.

Sacha Nathu is another example. He was selected as a midfielder for the NZ u17s way back then when NZ hosted the tournament. Then pretty sure played every minute of the tournie is goal.

Barry Pickering, injured his arm one season so played up front for Petone and ended up their top scorer, I think Wynton Rufer started life in football as a goalkeeper as well

Awesome!

Allan Stroud, national league striker for Christchurch United (and I think Dunedin City?), converted to a keeper by I think either Terry Conley or Iain Marshall and then played for the All Whites

This is a pretty good squad (other than GK depth). Looking forward to seeing more of Matthysen. Kowal a good addition.

Not true! Kowal had already signed for Dragons before Tasman had appointed Hedge or spoken to Kowal about the upcoming season. He made it clear whilst in wellington for winter he wouldn’t stay in NZ unless it was for one of last season’s play off teams.

I also think Tasman may have secured a fairly decent upgrade on Kowal, if my sources are correct.

Sounds like the Dragons defeated Southern 4 - 1, sorry no other details and unsure of the result between the two youth sides. Dragon's next to Auckland next weekend to play Eastern Suburbs and then Auckland City. (Corrected orginal post and playing Suburbs and not Wanderers)

Any idea if Lyle Mathysen is actually playing for CU this summer? I don't think he played in the game on the weekend.

As much as you can read anything from pre-season results, those two friendly results indicate it could be very tight  at the top end of the table this season.

First half red card for Tasman probably didn't help. Tasman United facebook page wasn't complimentary of the ref which I thought was poor form from whoever was running it.

Although Tasman got a red card they were allowed to replace the player and continue with 11 men on the field so enough with the excuses please. It could easily have been double figures whilst Tasman failed to register a shot on target.

Not an excuse, I had no way of knowing that. Its just a preseason game as well. Not a great result but still plenty of players to come in. New coach and an almost entirely new squad, the result wasn't exactly unexpected.

Canterbury United: Edward Ashton (GK), Lewis Gordon (GK), Conor Tracey (GK), Daniel Terris, Aaron Spain, Brock Messenger, Tom Schwarz (United Kingdom), Reese Cox, Sean Liddicoat, Andreas Wilson, Gary Ogilvie (United Kingdom), Luke Tongue, Adam Thurston (United Kingdom), James Pendrigh, Cory Mitchell, George King (United Kingdom), Maksym Kowal (Canada), Stephen Hoyle (United Kingdom), Juan Chang Urrea (Guatemala), Seth Clark, Byron Heath, Lyle Matthysen (South Africa)

Coach: Willy Gerdsen

Juan Chang makes the squad again. I don't think he got a minute of national league last season. Still, it does leave hope for the rest of us!

Hard to say what would have happened if Claps had been in the squad all season with Canterbury always going to make the top-four and the play-offs in what I believe was an average lead and we hardly showned up in the play-off game.

Would rather have Claps playing with us than against us.

Hopefully I will be proved wrong (know it is early days) but we struggled to put Southern away in the opening round and our top scorer from last season, Hoyle seemed to off the pace, along with several others as well, maybe is was the heat.

The new signings looked OK with the keeper impressing dominating his area.

The 100th win for the Dragon's will have to wait after they went down 3 - 1 to Eastern Suburbs. Not the best start to be  a goal down after two minutes and then conceding and own goal three minutes later. On the up side young Seth Clark opened his ISPS Handa goal account with a stunning strike.

I thought the kid looked really promising. Beat his man a few times and went on some good runs . A small but tricky looking player...

Canterbury United went down away to Auckland City 4 - 1 after Stephen Hoyle put the Dragon's infront in the 10th minutes.  Our heavest defeat since 29 November 2015 when we went down to Auckland City, also at Kiwitea Street by the same scoreline.

The result drops us back to 6th place on the table going into next Sunday home game against Hamilton Wanderers who are in fourth place.
