I'm a long way away from Canterbury geographically but it's pretty apparent that sides in the premiership run by the federations - canterbury , Southern , Hawkes bay and previously WaiBop - are not successful. The four sides that have won the premiership since it's inception - Auckland, Waitak , Wellington and Eastern Suburbs have all been club based. There is an inherent conflict between the activities of the federation and running an elite football side. Additionally the best administarors in NZ football have always been the unpaid volunteers , not the paid administrators with their fancy qualifications. Maybe it's time for the Russian and ChCh Utd to take over ?

It's not really as simple as that, Waitak has never been club based, although it could appear that way when Rex Dawkins was in charge

They are also the clubs from the big cities (Christchurch excepted) so they will have more resources, access to more money via advertisers, trusts etc

There have only been 2 clubs outside Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch that have ever won the National League (Napier City Rovers x 3, and Gisborne City x1)

Would also dispute that Southern are not successful, given that the franchise has been turned around since the federation took over (no more a guaranteed bottom 2 place)

What does need to be sorted is how the league can become financially viable, especially with the change in CWC money. And extending it to 27 games and some weird convoluted promotion \ relegation process isn't really the answer

Honest question - is this even possible? If so - how? I've been going to national league games for 15 years (admittedly only to TeeDubs) but struggle to see how a club can be viable given the attendance and the supposed $$$ some of these players are pocketing for a short season.

Ben Stroud and Dan Eade (typo on their own programme) in the squad this week, well done to those that picked that the other week.

Will it be enough to turn it around? Interesting quote from director/coach/everything that they are looking to get their season started properly. One would think when you're playing the 12th game of a 18 game season that that horse has well and truly bolted.

Anyone notice there is nothing on social media when Canty play away games? They post a programme before the match but absolutely nothing on twitter or anything while the game is building up or playing.

They didn't even post about the last away loss to Southern mind you they might have been a bit embarrassed more than anything.

Hawkes Bay are tweeting, I'm following that, but they didn't give our starting line up, anyone know?

Have to agree Vim. Seems like Canterbury as a whole is falling apart. Appointments of coaches for both the youth and men’s have resulted in terrible seasons (Matt Jansen has literally no idea) ( Lee Padmore - looking like the second wooden spoon of the clubs history - behind an u20 side of Phoenix reserves - enough said) . Who’s in charge at this club because a 5 year old could do better in charge

Doesn't Mainland have someone in charge of Marketing/Social media?  Since Mainland has brought the Canterbury United franchise more directly within the organisation the wheels have certainly started to fall off.

They do and when they are at home it's good, I doubt they would take the media person on their travels with them, don't know of any club that does. NZF really needs to get on to doing it themselves with input from the home clubs or just advertise the home clubs twitter \ Facebook feeds

Lee Padmore will be in the gun, but surely can't blamed for a most of it. Its a team short on quality of previous years due to the financial situation. A near full MPL based team will struggle until they are given time to develop as a unit over 2-3 seasons. Padmore looks a decent young coach and clearly has ties to the region. I back the proud region to be back up there, just a different plan how to get there!

Relegation awaits ... in the proposed (?) new national league model canterbury united would play in MPL. Is that right?  LOL, that’s not going to happen. So it would then fall to a club (looking at ewe Rams) to gain promotion somehow?  As Kramer said, “I’m so confused”.

That's not the way the new National League system starting next season works.

Canterbury are guaranteed one spot in the league so Canterbury United wouldn't get relegated.

Relegation is based on performances over four seasons, not just one poor season.

So it's pretty darn hard to get relegated...

Auckland City, Team Wellington and Waitakere United have more of the characteristics of regional representative franchises rather than clubs even if they are not run directly by their federations. They only field teams in the national league and national youth league and have no existence outside of that.

From Wikipedia: "Waitakere United was formed as a special franchise club in 2004 to play in the New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC), New Zealand's top domestic football competition. The team represents 12 member clubs from Mt Albert to the Kaipara."

Auckland City have close ties to Central United but are a different entity and field no teams outside of the national league.

In fact Auckland City were not even affiliated with the Auckland Football Federation as genuine clubs are required to be until this week:

http://www.aucklandfootball.org.nz/newsarticle/86754

They joined this week to satisfy NZ Football requirements for next season's nation league that participating clubs demonstrate a clear youth development pathway now the the national youth league is gone: "Auckland City FC join the federation member clubs in the form of a National League member club and will work in partnership with Central United FC to deliver elements of New Zealand Football’s Community Participation pathway."

Team Wellington (from Wikipedia): "Team Wellington FC was formed in 2004 by a consortium of Wellington clubs to compete in the New Zealand Football Championship. The uniform was yellow with black shorts, utilising the primary sporting colours of the Wellington region."

Of "the four sides that have won the premiership since it's inception - Auckland, Waitak , Wellington and Eastern Suburbs" only Eastern Suburbs is genuinely club based.

Okay, looking at the new rules, you are right.

It's the regional premier leagues that are guaranteed slots.

Mainland Premier League are guaranteed one slot.

(With a maximum of two Mainland Premier League teams allowed in the national league)

So you could end up with a situation where a Christchurch team got relegated while a Nelson team remained in the league.

Could lead to Canterbury clubs wanting Nelson to be dumped from the Mainland Premier League to guarantee a Canterbury side in the national league?

News just in - The committee of Canterbury United has made enquiries with NZ Football as to the size of the spoon to ensure it fits in the Trophy Cabinet.

Not quite the silverware they were after but they are back slapping each other as one of their KPIs was an addition to the Trophy Cabinet - so drinks all round.

Garbhan Coughlan of Southern United rumoured to be heading to live in Christchurch permanently to play for Tech in the winter and the Dragons in the summer.

A player who knows how to score a few:

https://int.soccerway.com/players/garbhan-coughlan/134928/

Garbhan played for Cashmere Tech last winter but with Paul O'Reilly no longer at Southern, I guess Garbhan feels no allegiance to them any more.

Or did I get the player name wrong yesterday?

Gavin, can you confirm?

One the strange signings I've seen. One of 3 Irishmen brought in from Ireland and given a job at Football South (Competitions Manager) and then decides to play in the Mainland Premier League.

If he feels no allegiance to them (your words not his, I know) then that would be a little odd.

Might be given a job at Mainland perhaps?

Not  surprising,

It did seem poor form, questionable ethically and a slap to the fee paying local community, that after being given a job by Football South (which he seemed unqualified and lacking experience) he choose to play in Christchurch.

Sums up the inevitable failure of the Southern United/Football South experiment.

Yup, that maybe the case. (Don't forget the 11-1 thumping Coastal gave Qtown as well, one of the greatest weekends of my life...)

I don't think anyone is hassling anyone for travelling to play football. It's just a little odd when you work for the football federation and decide to leave it to play elsewhere...

Believe it is true - the bit about Garbhan moving north to Christchurch, not really surprising as his partner lives in Christchurch.
