Good social media and a good chairman,  anything else?

I would argue most the players that have come through Manukau are on the wrong side of 30.  Issa, Micha etc are only around as long as the money is.

When Auckland Manukau (similar board) was left out of the NYL their facebook page was a drivel of racist slurs at NZ football.

There is very limited youth coming through the club.

I would say someone like Birkenhead or North Shore would be a better bet in regards to stability and consistency.

The wheels have really come off ! And the last coach was sacked for performance : )

They owe over 100k to players, coaches & sponsors ......... Let them finish out the season then give the licence to another club ..... Look at the positive effect Suburbs have had on the league.

Hmm what do Manukau United bring?

A quick glance through their facebook reveals they do a lot in the community, including partnering with refugee centres, tonnes of school visits and free coaching opportunities.

The other huge thing they bring is some diversity to the league. Both players and supporters. Bring in a shore team? great, another team from a rich, predominantly white community. One only needs to look at the vitriol directed toward Manukau in certain forums to see that having a bit of diversity is perhaps just what the league needs. Not all parents can afford $$$ for academies, coaching etc and it will take having a powerhouse club in South Auckland that brings in recognition and money to unlock the region and all of the potential it holds.

I agree with a lot you have said and I think a club from South Auckland is needed at some point for the game to grow - however I also think that should a club get into the NL and fail it will be very damaging for that same area.

If Manukau Utd can keep doing what they are doing and keep building their profile then yes they are a great case for future versions of this league.

Don't have any views on the merits of Manukau taking over Waitaks place. However don't really see that Waitaks woes are coaching. To my mind Waitaks demise started as soon as the Godfather Rex Dawkins stepped aside. Under his guidance Waitak were regular champs both domestically and in Oceania .Since then also rans ? Reinforces the point that leadership at the top is critical to success. Often wonder what may happen at Auckland City when/if Vuksich moves on ?

don't think it'd be such a problem at Auckland City as they have Central behind them and while they may be small they are a strong club. Waitakere's issue was it was Rex Dawkins at both United and Waitakere City

How long has he been chairman?

Big difference between the two clubs for me. ACFC and central seem tightly intertwined, sharing space on honours board etc, clubrooms and pitch that pay for themselves.

Waitakere seem like the worst end of the 'franchise' stick - playing in soulless trusts stadium, little interaction with feeder clubs, lacking volunteers. Perhaps the problem is leaders holding on too tightly to the reins then when they leave there is no-one to steer the cart.

Most people know the downfall is the result of one mans leadership but he refuses to let go as his ego is bigger than the trust stadium

With someone else driving it they may have a chance .......

How does one end up owing sponsors money? I thought the idea of sponsors was they give you money.... (or shirts or transport or other stuff)

Or have I been going about it wrong all these years?

Club Orange you have not been doing it wrong ! It was badly explained ..... : )

I heard people & companies provided accommodation and transport etc at highly discounted rates over the years.

And guess what. Have not been paid. That information is from a third party so would need to make up your own mind but the fact they in a whole heap of debt is common knowledge.

Firstly let me be very clear.  I am also a sucker for some Fiji gold and a curry.  A truly unique experience.

I also very much admire the work they are doing in the community.

However, it is my personal belief that the national league should be for the top teams in the country to compete in.  Not to give people a leg up.  I would much rather a consistently high performing team be given the opportunity.

For all the good things that Manukau United are doing, you must also understand the limitations they have.  Neither of the two founding clubs (Manukau City and Mangere United) have a recent track record of consistency or producing young players.  In fact if you really wanted to put the microscope on them they both have a history of being yo-yo clubs and rule breaking.

Until they can show some consistency (eg stay in the prem league for 5 or 6 years) this conversation should be put on hold.

This should not stop the community work or awesome catering.

Man I wish Waitak had a better online presence, trying to find info on their squad and signings is like finding a needle in a haystack compared to Auckland, Tasman, TW, etc. Had to come here to find out they released their record appearance holder and captain

Thanks for that, Comet would be absolutely incredible for my line of work if I actually had it, looks a great tool to come in handy. Any way to access it without signing up for a club?

No idea, believe only NZF, local bodies, referees and club administrators have access to it.

So the show goes on for Waitakere ! They owe every man and a dog money but allowed carry on and retain their licence. No word of a new coach apart from they had one and he left a week later : )

Clever move with the Western Springs youth team. They will gain a full team and a facility to play the games at.

No coach ? No signings as far as we know ? Venue ? About 6 weeks to go. Franchise has been a basket case since Dawkins and Bult and Waitakere City moved on. Problem is at the top of the organisation. Having said that Eastern suburbs also a similar position ?

oh yeah absolutely, sorry tim, i wasn't digging at you.

i think the lack of engagement from some franchises is appalling. there are others who would like to be there who would treat the league with more respect

The team will be made of young players which is not a bad thing really ...... However the reason they are going with that model is the bad thing. The chairman only cares about winning but he just cant throw any more cash at it with the amount they owe out.
