Was meaning to ask this, how did Kovacic go?

Looked good on the ball with some nice touches, forget the precise stat on how many passes he completed but he didn't misplace any.

Mateo Kovačić vs. Arsenal:

100% take-ons completed • 100% pass accuracy • 100% tackles won

54 touches 43 passes attempted 43 passes completed 3 tackles 2 fouls won 1 take-on

I look forward to Christensen displacing Luiz at some point.

Yes. Why is Christensen not playing yet? Haven't heard anything regarding injury?

Not injured afaik. Didn't play a big part in pre-season after his World Cup campaign with Denmark but then neither did Rudiger.

If we keep defending like we did vs Arsenal then it wont be long before we see Christensen and even Cahill

Great result. I thought it was well deserved.

Referee was pretty poor. Let Newcastle get away with some fairly cynical and persistent fouling on Hazard. The penalty call could have gone either way i thought, the defender did get the ball but also followed through with a high boot to trip Alonso. Pretty clear elbow to Giroud in the lead up to their goal.

I was surprised Newcastle set up so defensively with 9 plus the keeper behind the ball. If they'd seen the Arsenal game they would've noted we're not exactly that composed at the back. Once they did go behind Newcastle actually looked quite good on attack. Luiz was terrible in defending their goal. Just watched the ball come in and stood there.

We do look a little imbalanced in attack with Alonso always getting forward and Azpi not so much. I wonder if Sarri will think about moving Azpi into the center instead of Luiz and giving Moses a go at right back.

Azpi would get destroyed in the air as part of a 2. Think Sarri has settled on David and Rudi tbh, and he's not one for rotation. Barring injury we won't be seeing much of Gary and Andy in the league.

Guess Chelsea has to have one decent person in the ranks. (aside from the ex-Arsenal players of course)

That first goal vs Fulham was such a perfect example of Kante's new position working to perfection. Winning the ball high up, moving up field a bit more and shifting the ball to a goal scorer in Pedro.

Also, RLC looking good with another goal. A very Lampard looking goal

Ugh that was poor.

Christensen really didn't seize his chance. Alonso was terrible. Morata was his usual invisible self.

Going to be a real fight to make top 4 this season

Pulisic signed sealed and delivered, though heads back on loan to BVB for the rest of the season. No obvious spot for him until one of Willian/Pedro departs, presumably in the summer.

That's a good signing for you guys, an excellent nod to the future.

Out of interest what model does Chelsea run for transfers? Is it the classic sporting director and coach together or something else?

The last manager to have pretty much full control over transfers was Mourinho back in his first spell, following that it's been varying models of the club driving transfers with or without a DOF (currently without following Michael Emenalo's departure to Monaco) and with varying levels of consultation with the manager.

For Sarri you've seen the club pursue some of his hand-picked targets, Jorginho being the obvious example, and they've also attempted to sign the likes of Rugani and Higuain, players he's previously managed and presumably has recommended. But the club also makes its own moves, Arrizabalaga was scouted when the contract negotiations with Courtois broke down and it became clear we'd be needing to find a new GK. The transfer seemed to come out of nowhere and happen quite quickly, but it was obviously the club's primary contingency plan in the event of Courtois leaving.

According to the Telegraph's Matt Law (one of the most reliable journos who covers the club regularly) we were looking at Pulisic in the summer prior to Sarri being appointed, so he falls in the category of a club signing made with a view toward replacing the ageing Willian + Pedro RW unit. One benefit of Sarri is that he's more comfortable with this model than many managers (Conte, for example, was prone to throwing his toys out of the pram when the club wouldn't/couldn't get who he wanted), as he views himself as more of a players coach and isn't all that interested in the market. De Laurentiis at Napoli recently bemoaned the fact that he'd ask Sarri who to buy, and he'd reply that he didn't care.

"Sarri seemed timid and I discovered he was so dissatisfied with his past (working in finance). For a Communist to base his profession on the evils of money brought him to suffer from a syndrome of dissatisfaction.

"I found Sarri to be very highly-strung. His wife couldn’t even come to the stadium. I used to say to Sarri, who shall we buy? He’d reply that he didn’t want to know anything about it.”

Marina Granovskaia is basically the most important backroom figure at the club, overseeing it on behalf of Abramovich, and personally conducts all of the transfer business and contract negotiations. Following Emenalo's departure she nominally assumed his DOF duties, but he was arguably more a chief scout charged with being a conduit between the manager and the club, rather than a true decision-maker. She's basically been running the joint since 2010, and if we do bring in another DOF in future it will likely be more in the vein of the role I described Emenalo having rather than a Monchi/Marcel Brands/Txixi Begiristain type who oversee everything.

Interesting.Tt seems this is a common thing with the modern Manager. Klopp, Guardiola, Emery are all like this too, to varying degrees. Seems like it's come out of Germany more than anywhere else, but is taking hold throughout Europe.

At Arsenal Emery was given the title "Head Coach". In reality Wenger was replaced by 3 guys, splitting his role up. Too much work in the modern age.

Mourinho's behaviour, resisting a DoF, whinging 24/7 about his players and how he needs better ones, that's the stuff of the old world now. Team Managers/Coaches are hired on the pretence that they need to just get working, don't complain about your squad, we've got other people responsible for that. A coach is expected to come in and focus on the first team style and tactics, coach the players on how to get it done, and that's it really.

With Sarri I think it's also a specific product of his rise through the lower leagues in Italy. At all of his clubs prior to Empoli his success largely rested on his ability to improve the players at his disposal, rather than squad building via the market.

Still rumblings on Higuian and Paredes.

If we end up with Pulisic, Higuian and keeping CHO i'll be happy.

Higuain on the way then. 6 month loan with an option to extend it by another 12. Non-obligatory buy option as was the case with Milan. Juve have reportedly green lit the move but could still be a bit of a wait for Milan to get Piatek or someone else in.

Morata off to Atleti on loan, will be interesting to see what Simeone can do with him.

Yea it will be very interesting to see what Morata can do elsewhere. He just looks so incredibly down on confidence.Sulks around the pitch getting flagged offside and falling down at the slightest of touches.

After his hattrick vs stoke last season where he was actually using his pace and taking people on I thought he was going to be a great player for us.

Yea there is certainly a few. I think maybe the sale price of some has kind of justified the system.

Just last season we sold Atsu for 6.2m, Traore for 8.8m, Ake for 20m and Chalobah for 5m.

So if they don't end up cracking the first team at least we're getting decent coin for some of them.

Gonzo on the scene... Sarri seems pleased.

Will be overlooked due to the Dier effort but Kepa basically all-but ended the shootout with his solid save.

I'd completely forgotten about Jorginho's aptitude for penalties. Ruthless.

FFS that was terrible.

Only saw the first half before having to head into a meeting. We have so much possession but just look toothless in attack. We're finding it so hard to generate genuine goal scoring chances. That being said, we have hit the post 17 times this season, more than any other team. If Kova scores early maybe it's a different story.

Scary to see how far off the top teams we are though.

Well work meant i could't see the game. Certainly doesn't look like i missed much. Some fairly negative chants. "Fudge Sarriball" being one of them. Also chanting for CHO to be brought on, and booing when he wasn't. I've read that the Chelsea fans joined in with the United fans chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning".

It's hard to see where we go from here. It doesn't appear we have the players capable of implementing Sarri's system, but the board won't buy the players he needs so around we go. We'll probably sack him, hire a new manager, not give him the players he needs to make his system work, fire him and repeat.

Haven't been in here for a few days, expected a lot more hate regarding the Kepa substitution debacle. The media certainly grabbed a hold of it. I thought it was a case of a miscommunication being compounded by a pretty poor reaction. Messi has himself refused to come off before but it seemed to barely rate a mention cos it was Messi.

On to the game this morning, really huge 3 points following the Cup final defeat. I couldn't see it as i was in a meeting but have since seen the goals and that own goal from Trippier was amongst the strangest I've seen.

If we can keep playing like we've played the last 2 games then top 4 might still be on!
