Babels goal was excellent, he made 2 defenders look silly.

Pennant really looks like he's playing with a ton of confidence now, it's the first time I've seen him swap wings. Must get an England call soon.

How about the stats, 21 shots, 10 on target. GD +9, almost 1/3 of last seasons total after 4 games.

Just been reading bbc sport quotes, love the chants at the end.

Hope Heskey scores and rescues Eng-ger-land cause he's been getting a lot of stick lately even more than usual.

Not much Liverpool news. Paco out though, no-ones mentioned that

This is the best video of the goals I found on YouTube - you can hear the chanting during replays and stuff as well :)

From what I read the relationship between Rafa and Paco has been deteriorating for some time. Even to the point that at the start of the season, an extra fitness coach and a new team administrator were hired, these being the 2 main functions of Paco.

So it seems that this move was not so unexpected and there are no plans to replace him.

I have also heard that Rafa had been taking a lot more of a hands-on approach and some of the changes he was making did not please Paco. However, the players appear to like the changes so don't expect too much fall out from this move.

The big advantage Liverpool have right now is that all four strikers seem to be on form and a threat. They are also all very different poising defences many questions. On top of that they have Gerrard and they have Carragher... wow!

Won't be easy but we should come away with a win. Good to see Gerard and Carragher back.
Damn the AB's are playing at the same time.

u can never know with rafa.... but im guesing

                 reina
  finnan carra dan arbeloa
  pennant stieve masherano riise
            vorinin torres

im guessing that pompey will be playing to win, not just 11 players behind the ball, thats why i pick alonso over masherano.

my prediction.....3-1 to liverpool

Liverpool played poorly, lucky to get away with the 0-0 score.  Rafa did make 5 changes, Stevie, Torres both on the bench.

Benching Torres and Stevie was a mistake. That Crouch/Voronin combo up front just didn't work.

Second half was balls as...

First 20 minutes looked good but then we faded. Great save by Reina.

The team selection was logical when you think about it. He picked the players who didn't play internationals during the week or didn't play full games.

It's hard when they didn't even get one full training run together between the internationals and the game on the weekend.

I think Rafa also has one eye on the Porto game on Tuesday. I'm sure we'll see the full strength team for that, Kuyt and Torres up front, Stevie G and maybe Mascherano in MF.

Really poor and disappointing versus Portsmouth, again another harsh penalty was awarded (third of the season) referees and linesman now trying to out do each other for who can give the worst penalty decision against Liverpool, or want to see how good Reina is.

Good save from Reina looking good this season, no one else looked decent, Voronin started well, as did Sissoko but all faded away. More worryingly was that Kanu was really dominant against our defence and we let players ghost in too easily.

only saw the first half but we look good for most of it. that penalty was a joke! Thank god reina save it. A draw is better than a lost.

The argie looked good in midfield i thought, and about the first 20 minutes or so we looked good, but yea the front combination didn't work, but players do need rest, and thank god we didn't lose (because it looked likely!!) ..Torres looked sharp when he came on, spurned a good chance, but he can be forgiven :) ... looking forward to the midweek game this week

huh Argie in the midfield?

Also on the note that Rafa wants to rest players for Porto I'd rather it be the other way around go all out in the League games.

God, haven't seen them play that bad in a looooong time. Lucky to come out of it with a point really, because Porto completely outplayed us. We just couldn't seem to string our passes together or get any possession.

Don't know where Gerrard was, or what he was doing all night, but we had no midfeild presence and couldn't get Torres or Kuyt involved in any attacking play.

On a positve note though, damn Dirk Kuyt is primo. He didn't stop running all night, was popping up everywhere...

Really poor in attack today, we defended well though. But not being able to string together 2 passes was poor. Don't know what all the fuss was about Quaresma, its all nice to do good tricks and beat people but if you can't cross, shoot, or deliver a free kick then what use are you.

Obviously Kuyt MOM. JP lost his head and Lubos Michel sent him off, thought he did well too (Michel) can have no complaints.

I thought Liverpool done well enough against Porto, They did have a player sent off and probably hung on at the end, however a few years ago that would of meant Liverpool would of  lost the game. I think this year is gonna be the year for Liverpool and Gerrard!!!

I agree ... Chelsea don't look the best and with Mourinho gone, are going to struggle for consistency, this year is looking very good for Liverpool

Bad news, Agger and Alonso both out for 6 weeks.

Both have come down with the dreaded metatarsal flu while on international duty. Time to start testing that squad depth we've been hearing about.

Better news, Aurelio is fit for the first team again.

We have the cover in midfield. But we are looking a bit light at the back.

We should win this weekend. Torres will score 2 or 3

I said at the start we needed another CB, Hyypia hasn't convinced me that he is still good enough at the top level. Liverpool hasn't been playing well of late. Poor performances at Pompey and Porto, but this match should be good, back at home.

Horrible today. Little urgency and almost no flair. Birmingham came to get a point and got it. I don't know why Torres was again on the bench. Every player wasn't up to scratch particularly disappointed with Voronin who offered nothing (his off the ball play is horrible), Kuyt never made a clean connection, Gerrard didn't get on the ball enough (again), Pennant form has suddenly dropped off in last few games. Babel always looks clumsy now... SO FRUSTRATING

Yeah it was frustrating, we all know they can do better, but hey at least we are not losing, points are always better than none, so lets keep faith, i know we can do it this year

We should have won last week and we should have won this week. Again, don't know just what the f*ck Rafa thinks he's doing leaving Torres on the god-damn bench for so long. I'm sure he didn't fork out $20 mil for an impact bench player. He's obviously match fit, obviously in form, and obviously capable of turning chances into goals better than Voronin or Crouch, so why he's been sitting on the sidelines for the better of 2 hours over the lasst 2 games is beyond me.

4 dropped points over the last 2 games as far as I'm concerned, and the way our injuries are mounting at the moment the last thing we need is to drop points in games we should be winning.

On the bright side, at least we're not losing the away games like we were over the last few seasons...

Good point about Torrres, here we are saying he's the best buy of the premiership, and Raffa leaves him on the bench, Shave the Beard mate and ya might get some brain cells back!!

rafa needs to grow some balls and play 3-4-3 at home

e.g:

               reina

     Hypia Carra Arbeloa

Finnan Gerrard Alonso Riise

       Torres  Crouch  Kuyt

Subs

Injate
Aureilo
Mascherano
Vorinonin
(and would have hypia if agger was fit)

i think babel needs some more gametime in england before he can rally fit in at liverpool, a season loan to birmingham or derby etc would do him good, (hopefully he proves me wrong)

I don't think Liverpool did much wrong against Birmingham, apart from having Torres on the bench instead of starting. Bloody hard to get through such a dense blue wall, and the one time they had a chance of a fast break with the BC players up for a corner (their first at 60mins) they pull out a professional foul as Reina is about to hurl the ball half way up the field. Got sick of the commentators saying how pleased Birmingham must be still being nil-nil. Negative football that should not be encouraged. Thought Carragher had a good game (go cuz), got up the field a few times and even got a (rare) shot at goal (only to be blocked). Pennant was industrious. Babel's touch looked a little off, thought he looked more dangerous in the earlier games. Get Torres on an get some value for money (and he cost me a fortune in Fantasy Prem League too!)

Agreed about the negative approach Birmingham took to the game, but it was obviously their gameplan to try and shut us down by defending and getting numbers behind the ball. To their credit it worked, but we had enough possesion in the right area that we should have at least created more opportunities and put a couple away.

But def got shut done, and quite effectively too. Really hope it doesn't put the same idea in the heads of the other clubs...
