Second half fight back not enough for Aussie, going down 3-2. In the other game Vietnam holds onto a 0-0 draw vs Syria to progress into the next stage at Aussies expense

Just seen the Vuka penalty save. Great work.

Watched another clip which shows the challenge that lead to the penalty!

Was that not a studs up lung tackle worthy of a red?

Apparently they were hoping to avoid teams from the Middle East!!

Their record in that part of the world isn’t great, since joining Asia.

In fact looking at those teams, there is some bad taste joke in there, maybe with a reference to the Lowry’s and their faith or similar.

Should still be too good for Jordan and Palestine. Syria of course so nearly knocked them out, re World Cup qualifying.

Top 2 each pool to Round of 16, plus best four 3rd placed teams.

Wouldn’t it be great for AWs to be playing in this. I reckon at full strength we’d be better than at least half of these 24 teams, despite what rankings say.

After being called into the training squad late, J-Mac makes the final cut. The four unlucky players to be cut are Karacic, Brillante, Troisi and Rukavytsya.

Aussie beat Hungary 2-1. Arzani opened the scoring (with the help of some horrible keeping) https://twitter.com/tensporttv/status/1005497286258974720 Aussie then concede an oggie in the 88th minute but Hungary returns the favour with an oggie of their own in the 90+2 minute https://twitter.com/Socceroos/status/1005513461651030016

Controversial opinion:

I want to see Australia do really well in the World Cup, though I don't predict them to get through their group.

They have guys like Rogic who I've watched in the A-League and were fantastic, and hell, if Australia won the World Cup, that would be great for the prospects of our players in the A-League.

I support Socceroos because I’ve lived in Australia, apart from Cahill I think they are pretty low on the dickhead index, and they are generally the underdog. Their run in 2006 WC was compelling viewing.

And Cahill a bit like Lleyton Hewitt, can be a trifle misunderstood. Fierce determination, no prisoners attitude, that rubs many people up wrong way. Polarising. If was a Kiwi many would admire that, others not. Will never be everyone’s cup of chai

The Aussies I know were very happy for us that we qualified in 2010. So have no trouble cheering their football team.

The Baggy Green cricket team has however always been full of arseholes

Could be worse - you could say you were going to support engerland or even just see them do well!

Only 2 EPL players (Ryan & Mooy).

With Cahill gone, is end of 2006 'golden generation'. Back then they had a heap of EPL regulars.

Give AWs a game FFA.

Not denying that Socceroos should win - esp with Reid and Thomas injured.

It’s just crazy now how long it’s been since we last played our closest neighbour. Australia play Kuwait in next FIFA window - can’t tell me that the AWs ain’t as good as the Kuwaitis. Acknowledge that game is in the Gulf, and obviously a warm up for Asian Cup in UAE next January.

Unfortunately the Socceroos have already filled their Nov FIFA window with 2 games being Sth Korea and Lebanon.

So we are looking at March window next year, as earliest for any chance of a game verus them.

I expect AWs will go without a game in the 3 Sept-Oct-Nov windows this year. That’s pretty shark.

One in a million
