Ninth Kiwi to currently be on the books of an MLS club.

Surely the odds are that some of them will soon crack the first team along with Gleeson and Boxall, the only ones currently playing regular first team football. Colvey has had a few games here and there in MLS.

Tuiloma, Wynne, Marinovic, Colvey, de Vries and  Bevan making up the rest of the contingent.

It's great to have the MLS every week on the Duke channel now.

Portland Timbers live tomorrow.

Seem to recall he had a fine Olympics under Embers before he went a-wandering.

Yeah I think he featured at Olympics alongside Ryan Nelsen, who rated him as an athlete from memory. Just said he needed to show right professional attitude, and he would carve out a pro career.

Do we count Wynne, de Vries and Bevan as on the books of an MLS club?

Deal until the end of the season with options for 2018, 2019 & 2020

MLS clubs can sell international roster spots to each other, so they are pretty easy to get extra. For example the Whitecaps bought a spot for $50k allocation money in order for Marinovic to sign and another one for 75k yesterday to sign someone else.

The MLS is set up really differently to any other league in the world isn't it, I'm not aware of any other league that operates in a similar way whatsoever.

Commentators saying SKC have had a few games recently, so are resting a lot of the first teamers. Hopefully a good effort today & he might have a chance of retaining his spot.

With Tommy Smith's injury I'd bring Musa into the All Whites.

Ends 1-0 to the Sounders. Musa picked up a yellow for attempting a bicycle kick off the ground & kicking a Sounders CB in the guts. He had a decent shot on goal late in the game but other than that didn't do much of note, pretty solid debut I guess.

Brotherton is surely the next cab off the ranks, Hudson pretty much as his guys & Musa would have to nail down a starting spot to even get considered I think

Oh yeah I don't think Hudson will pick him but I'd have him considering no Tuiloma, and whilst Themi can play DM he's not very mobile.

Let Musa get established first and let Tuiloma stay where he is. Brotherton in and Themi to start. If Musa can hold down a spot then lets see how he goes in October against Japan?

I think starting MLS is a higher level than the Premier League U23 comp

wiz1.net has a whole lot of streams of sport, on the day if the SKC game is on TV it will probably have a stream but a different link every time.

It's miles ahead.

A colleague's son is in the Spurs U23s and has told me the players are kept in cotton wool and are untested in a competitive environment.  His son has been linked with a loan moved to a League One side which he's pushing hard for due to the competitive nature of actual league football although he'd take any gig from National League up.

yes agree 100%.  The U23 league has a very poor record of producing first team footballers

MLS may be miles ahead, but given previous selections, it wasn't unfair to consider that Sam Brotherton was ahead of Musa as a CB option. Think it's the midfield role that's given him the edge here.

while I happy that Musa has come in, I just struggle to understand how he has suddenly leapfrog Brotherton and Adams etc that have previously kept him out of the squad. Has he suddenly become a better player in the last 6 months... Anyway think he desevres his chance i hope he makes the most of it.

Arriving from England age 6, and with football far from his or his parents' minds, he was an obvious candidate to be granted an exemption, but that process is easier said than done.

Musa said his dad "was an absolute legend," in getting it over the line, "calling up Fifa, and doing all the work that in truth, New Zealand Football just wasn't doing".

Seems to me that Hudson just forgot about Musa and now that he sees some guy from NZ sign to the MLS, he conveniently remembers about him and people applaud him on his excellent choice of callup

Possibly. But I seem to recall that AH helped Musa get his first gig in the USL with St Louis. May have that wrong.

I think it's reasonable for a national team manager to rely on the judgement of club managers i.e. if someone in the MLS is prepared to pay Musa to play first team football then Hudson can use that as a barometer of his progress.  It's pretty hard to keep track of a lot of guys who are playing in the lower leagues when you can't go and watch them live all the time

I thought that's what Hudson was paid to do - keep a track on all prospective NZ players. Even if he can't watch them live NZF must have a VHS machine they can fire up when the fax is not being used

Aren't most of these games in the States streamed? How many players does he realistically need to keep track of. I think Musa has been hard done by to not be involved considering some of the others that have been there instead of him.

Disagree. He only became eligible for AWs late last year. So he has missed Fiji games (when he would have been out of season & possibly low on fitness) plus Confeds buildup and Confeds tourney proper (when he would have missed a host of USL games if part of the AWs, which then could possibly have harmed his prospects of getting a MLS contract, as Kansas City were obviously watching his progress at USL level closely).

Whether by design or accident think the timing is just about perfect for Musa to be back in AWs squad.

Let's also not forget that the NT coach has people around him who will help him to keep track of players, e.g. surely he doesn't watch every single minute played by every single current or potential AW player every week - he can delegate some of those tasks to others surely.
