Congrats to him. Is this a full time contract, or is he effectively now on pre-season trial with Vancouver?

If it is a contract, imagine he like Wynne will mainly feature for their 2nd team (Whitecaps II) - and be another Kiwi to monitor in the USL League.

It's basically a trial, according to that Stuff article up there

He is on pre season trial just like what colvey did, then the white caps will decided if he will get a pro contract or not.

A fair few signings to Universities in January. If you know of any new ones, please post them so I can update my list appropriately! Cheers

Anyone know if Francis Devries signed for the Whitecaps?

Using Kip Colvey trialling and then having his MLS contract confirmed last season as a guide (also a draft pick) - don't expect an answer until early March.

Whitecaps first MLS game is 6th March.

It is to my knowledge that de Vries has not been signed on. Unfortunately, as he was a stand out at the combine. Hopefully he get pick up and gig somewhere else. His Switzerland heritage will definitely help in in Europe now the ASP season is coming to an end

Pretty sure he's playing for Whitecaps 2 alongside Deklan Wynne. I read a story where Wynne spoke of having a Kiwi team-mate.

Forward Daniel Cyra, Wynne's fellow New Zealander, is also in camp as a trialist after previously featuring for Hibiscus Coast AFC.

With the MLS kicking off this weekend, and seeing as Francis has yet to sign an MLS contract with the Whitecaps, it looks likely that he will most likely sign with Whitecaps 2 and feature in the USL.

University at Buffalo has cut men's soccer from it's program. There are 4 Kiwis at this college that will now have to find new places to play & study - Scott Doney, Fox Slotemaker, Cameron Hogg and Nick Forrester.

Could they follow their Kiwi coach Stu Riddle who left for North Kentucky University at the end of last season?

Elliott Collier (ex WaiBop) came on as a reserve for Michigan Bucks as they beat Indy Eleven 1-0, in the US Open Cup (FA Cup for the States?).

Craig Henderson not in the Indy Eleven match day squad.

Michigan Bucks play in the PDL (USA 4th tier).

Not that easy unfortunately. This was a Division I programme so each would of been on full scholarships. Would think it would be hard for the likes of NKU to take on 4 new full scholarships when it would mean 4 less freshmen for next season. Would upset the balance in terms of succession recruiting.

There is no relationship between it being a Division 1 programme & being on/receiving a full athletic scholarship in Soccer. Soccer is an "equivalency sport" which means scholarships are not necessarily full scholarships as opposed to "head count" sports eg. US Football.

In NCAA Div 1 Soccer there is a max of 9.9 full scholarship amounts per team which can be divided between all players.

University at Buffalo:

Sticker Price:  $44,698.00

Average athletic scholarship(male): $17,931.00 (college raptor)

Academic scholarships are also available (to those who qualify), in helping bridge some of the gap in costs but the "Bank of Mum & Dad" is also a likely contributor

I stand corrected, I based my comments on my knowledge of basketball and football scholarships. Thanks, that info surprised me, soccer players are getting ripped off....

And so has Fox at Old Dominion University: http://www.odusports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=2...

Such as? ACFC in A league or more quotas for Kiwis in Handy Premiership, as opposed to journeymen from Spain, Ireland, UK? What other ideas do you have?

Also, I don't understand "false pretences" either. Given the minute chances of getting any sort of pro contract, many would think it's smart to get some college education. It's not the only option, but certainly valid. Not really sure what you're getting at it - care to expand?

A, many of these colleges don't offer a decent education, so while they may get a degree, it's not really a career track degree

B, I'm not sure as to the size of this - but how many are going on full scholarships vs how many are going on partials? Earlier chat in this thread suggests many partials, so one of the main potential benefits (free education) disappears

C, wide range of standards. If you're Cory Brown at Xavier, or Sam Brotherton at Wisconsin or Rosie White at UCLA, you're in a fairly well-regarded programme. But look at how many kids are over there and the number who are at tiny liberal arts colleges in the middle of nowhere.

D, can we work with our local (excellent by world standards) universities - Uni of Waikato has Hilary Scholars for example - to give 19yo, 20yo Kiwis similar benefits? Would also need changes to our national league to make it aspirational.

E, it means that where there should be a group of kids coming through and giving NZ a strong national competition, they're going to the US

F, theres heaps of examples of kids who go for one year and don't find it to their liking.

If he keeps going as well as previously this season I think he's a good shot at getting picked up by an MLS team in the draft
