Would be the perfect marquee for the Phoenix.

He'd definitely be good enough as a marquee (for us and for the league) but surely he'd want to go back to MVC or SFC/MCY at a stretch. Shame cause it would be great to have it.

Let's not forget that he'd be on decent coin there and his team would probably prefer he asked to be released from his contract (no payout) rather than paying his wages for him to play down here...

Are you saying that a reserve player in the Dutch first division, who has only played semi regular 1st team football in the Swiss league, is good enough to be a marquee in the A League?

Yes, because when he plays in the A-League he's consistently in the top 10 players.

A dude that's won the best player in the A-League in the past? Yeah, probably.

Also neither Berisha or Fornoroli were marquees when they arrived, their performances in the A-League is what brought them up to marquee status. Although Rojas probably wouldn't be worth a marquee deal because he will be down on confidence and might not fire straight away and he's also not the sort of player that we need ATM.

Precisely.

Not so much on his current form, of course, but simply on his stats and the fact that he literally lit up the A-League over his two stints with MCV:

HonoursCountry

New Zealand

Individual

If not as an international marquee, surely he qualifies as a domestic one assuming NZers can be treated as domestic marquees for the Nix!

There's no such thing as domestic marquee anymore, a team can have two marquees (which can be international or not) and a guest player who can play 14 games, there used to also be a full season guest player (or the Tim Cahill rule) which allowed a guest player to play the full season but that finished when Cahill left.

I kind of think the A-League should rebrand the marquee players as designated players (a la MLS) as the wording creates confusion, a marquee is just a very expensive player who's outside of the cap.

Although, what we appear to be chasing is a true marquee, i.e. someone who's eligible for FFA marquee funds.

Of course someone who has been the best player in the A-league and still in their prime is good enough to be a marquee. Rojas was good at Victory, went to Europe and did nothing, came back to the Victory and carved and then has gone to Europe and done nothing. A marquee also doesn't have to be on 1 mill a year or anything. It can just be a player who offers your squad a little bit extra.

Rojas has 27 in goals in his last 47 A-league games, Barbarouses had scored 15 in his 70 before we made him a marquee.

I think there would be a few Eredivisie teams that would have him. I also think he still adds value to the Heerenveen squad. Obviously he’d like to be starting but he could still make his way into the starting 11 across the season.

More splinters for Rojas. Heerenveen win 3-1 in Dutch Cup against Groene Star from Dutch 5th tier.

Elsewhere I note in a shock PSV were knocked out of the Cup, losing 2-3 at home to RKC Waalwijk who sit 15th in Div 2. RKC are also the club of young Leon Van Den Hoven, so be a big buzz round his club at the moment.

Heerenveen lose 0-2 to bottom of the table Groningen.

They were already 2-0 down at HT, and you would have thought chasing the game, but still no minutes for Rojas.

Young Jizz got 20 mins off the bench.

First minutes in a long time, as subbed on at 77 min mark in a 3-0 loss at league leaders PSV.

Heerenveen had a player sent off at 37 mins, which would have ruined their already slim chances of getting a result.

They had 29% possession and 0 shots on target. Still good to see Rojas get a run.

Presume the two AWs caught up post match.

Rojas off the bench in the 68th minute with the score 5-1 to the good - score stays that way until the end. Woud and McGarry don't make an appearance.

Willem II had player sent off at 39 mins (score 1-1), which probably affected McGarry’s chances of getting some mins.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the WMG look to target him as a marquee signing for them. He likes Melbourne, is a very well known player in the region & would annoy the Victory fans a lot.

Little Christmas cheer for Heerenveen as they have two players sent off in a 4-2 loss at NAC Breda. Both straight reds.

First guy sent off at 14 mins, being their goal scorer when the score was 1-1.

Despite being a man down, Heerenveen take a 2-1 lead at 27 mins.

However game becomes a lost cause at 47 mins with 2nd send off. The 9 man team then conceded 3 goals.

Jizz and Marco watch it all from the bench. Bright spot is must be increased chance of some game time next match, with a few suspensions.

Eredivisie now breaks for a month.

Heerenveen expected to sell Zeneli and Thorsby

Posted By Admin On January 2nd, 2019 05:14 PM | Eredivisie, Transfer NewsAccording to Voetbal International, Heerenveen are expected to have a clear out this month with Arber Zeneli and Morten Thorsby two of the players set to depart.

Thorsby has been in good form this season with five goals in twelve games, but the Norwegian’s contract expires in the summer and an extension doesn’t seem likely. Heerenveen will now look to offload the 22-year-old in order to prevent him leaving for a free.

With eight assists and three goals, Zeneli has been a star for the Frisians and there is plenty of interest in the 23-year-old winger. Clubs from Turkey and Italy are circling the Kosovo international and Heerenveen may look to cash in.

Heerenveen are looking to slash their wage bill and are also open to offers for Marco Rojas, Yuki Kobayashi and Nemanja Mihajlovic.

Even if he gets picked up by another club in this league, I suspect he'd be destined to life as a bench warmer. What are his best options? Drop down to the Eredivisie second tier? Or might it be time to decide he's never going to crack the European big leagues and come back to the A-League where he'd still be in high demand.

Truth is, he could probably go to a bunch of interesting leagues but he must be careful in choosing a country where he will get meaningful game time and have a chance to show what he's got.
