Scores his 3rd of the season in a 2-1 loss to table topping Kyoto Sanga.

Gifu remain 22nd and adrift at the bottom, four points from safety. Been flirting with relegation for several seasons now, can they escape once more?

De Vries scored at 37 mins, and then subbed at HT (injured?) when score was 1-1.

In with another goal (4th of the season) as Gifu currently, somewhat surprisingly too, lead V-Varen Nagasaki 3-1 away from home.

20 minutes to go, and if they hang on, would only be the 2nd away win of the season for Gifu.

And they do hang on to win 3-1. Big upset.

De Vries 76 mins before being subbed.

Goal highlight about 4.35 mins in below video. Nice strike with left peg.

Replaced at 78 mins in a 0-2 home loss to Avispa Fukuoka.

Big opportunity missed for Gifu. Fukuoka being only 3 places (and 4 points) above them on the table, and a likely relegation rival.

Gets subbed at HT, as Gifu get a 0-4 spanking at home from top of the table Kashiwa Reysol.

Gifu were already down by 3 goals at HT, and remain bottom of the J2 table, 7 points from safety.

Kashiwa are runaway league leaders (9 points clear), so that's of some consolation. They have a number of Brazilians, plus Kenyan Michael Olunga (scored 2 goals in this game), who had a season in La Liga with Girona.

An unused sub midweek, as Gifu had a crucial 1-0 loss at Kagoshima United.

Kagoshima are relegation rivals, and prior that game were only 3 pts ahead of Gifu.

Now 6 points in front with 4 games left.

Make that 6 points behind with 3 games left - as Gifu currently getting a thrashing from Tokushima Vortis (5th on the table). Down 0-4 already at HT.

So relegation looks highly likely for De Vries and his team mates.

De Vries played the 2nd half but it didn’t change things, Gifu walloped at home 7-0.

The mid week loss which made relegation likely must have drained morale. Now the drop looks almost certain.

What's the Japanese 3rd tier like?

Taken from Wikipedia

Rules for promotion to J2 are largely similar to those of Japan Football League in recent seasons: to be promoted, a club must hold or be granted a J2 license and finish in top 2 of the league. Since 2017, the champions and the runners-up have been promoted directly and replace the 21st- and 22nd-placed J2 clubs. If only the champion or runner-up holds or is given a J2 license, only the bottom club of J2 is relegated; if both top 2 finishers are ineligible for promotion, then no teams will be promoted to or relegated from J2. For promotion purposes, under-23 teams are excluded from the final table when considering which teams are eligible for promotion. An extreme example would be the following scenario: If all three under-23 teams finished in the top 3, then the fourth- and fifth-placed teams would be eligible for promotion (subject to the license requirement).[13]

No relegation to JFL is planned in the foreseeable future.

They've literally scraped by for several seasons, so imagine if they stayed up on this technicality! Not currently sure what the status is of the J3 1st and 2nd place is though. Although I'm assuming that there is no way out for Gifu as it currently stands.

Kiwi match up in J2. Well sort of.

Relegation confirmed for Gifu with a 2-0 loss at Alberix Niigata.

De Vries an unused sub.

Niigata still a mathematchical chance of making promotion playoffs.

Fitzgerald a full game for them.

Hopefully he gets signed by another J.2 team so he stays there..but seems to have fallen out of favor recently so if you're not playing, offers won't necessarily be flooding in.

And in a strange turn of events, de Vries is now trialling at the snakes.

Stoked for the lad, just wish a better club had come in with an offer. Will of course take up an import slot so hope he smashes it even if it’s for Rudan

J1 is far superior, so I am unsure how much weaker J2 would be to the A League??

A better player than Appiah IMO, but import quality no.
