From this week's Flying Kiwis

"Speaking of which, those Champions League and Europa League spots have been awarded to the teams as they stand.

Meaning that PSV will enter qualifying for the Europa League."

Cool little story from this week's Flying Kiwis.

Notice Ryan doesn't seem to do his interviews in the native tongue. My brother lived in Suriname for a few years and tried to learn Dutch. Not easy apparently.

Get that into ya, some wholesome content for a Tuesday morning. The story there is that PSV have this PSV OldStars team which compete in an over-60s league for walking football. But, you know, obviously the over-60s league isn’t in action right now so the OldStars have been doing the zoom meeting thing for virtual training sessions and workout regimes with the PSV trainer getting involved too. And Ryan Thomas stepped in to say g’day last week and help out. What a lad. The old fella with the Billy Connolly looking moustache at the start, he’s a 70 year old ex-cop named Wim who suffers from PTSD and has used the walking footy to help cope with it all.

Plays 2nd half in a pre season friendly verus Willem II (Woud's parent club).

1-1 draw for what it's worth.

Looks like PSV are playing a host of German sides next in friendlies, but unfortunately not Nurnberg.

Full game in a 4-0 win over Hertha Berlin in a pre season friendly.

Credited with an assist.

Looks like PSV took game pretty seriously only making 4 subs.

Matt Leckie came on at 70th minute for Hertha.

PSV have one more friendly against Bochum, before Eredivisie season starts 13th Sept.

Woud's Almere City start their season in Dutch 2nd tier tomorrow.

Well spotted Big Pete. His boyhood club, last playing for them in 2002!

How many dives did he manage in his 30 mins?

From this week's Flying Kiwis, good early season wrap om Thomas and PSV.

"No kiwi male footballer other than Chris Wood is playing consistently at a higher level than Ryan Thomas, whose general excellence gets a little slept upon if we’re being totally honest. First game of the new season and there he was in the starting line-up for PSV as they faced off against Groningen... and once again he was overshadowed, granted so was everybody else on the pitch, as Dutch legend Arjen Robben came out of retirement to play for the club where his professional career started (the club played him a montage of Michael Jordan clips to convince him to make his comeback, lol). Great reception for Robben... though the fella only lasted 28 minutes before he was replaced with injury. Stink.

Thommo started in the midfield, settling back into his more natural position after filling in as a second striker last season leading into the pandemic abandonment. That meant plenty of touches, plenty of ghosting movements around the park, as PSV slowly took control of the game and eventually scored midway through the first half via Cody Gakpo. As it happens, Thomas didn’t last much longer coz he was replaced after 51 minutes in a double sub (Sam Lammers also subbed off – the two makeshift strikers from last season) with the score still at 1-0. Bit rough on him but it was seemingly more a matter of getting more creativity out there to be sure of those three points. Thomas completed 49 of 51 attempted passes which is rather bonkers. Word is that the new gaffer quite likes what he offers to the team’s style of play...

ED.nl: “Ryan Thomas does not bring the creativity that Ihattaren can bring to the table, but he does bring walking ability, drive and willingness. It is what Schmidt wants to see and a choice will therefore cause headaches for the coach.”

Mohamed Ihattaren, by the way, was dropped for this game because Roger Schmidt didn’t rate the teenager’s attitude coming out of the international break. Damn, son. Anyway PSV went and straight away gifted an equaliser to Groningen when the keeper coughed up the ball trying to pass it out of defence. Tomas Suslov with the goal. However that was but a mere blip because almost immediately PSV responded by retaking the lead with Donyell Malen finishing one off in the 57th minute.

Malen would later hit the post as PSV struggled to close it out and with ten minute to go the same dude missed from the penalty spot (after an errant handball). Finally Gakpo stepped up with his second three minutes from time and PSV left with a 3-1 victory to start a pretty fascinating season. They’re coming off a shocker 2019-20 which has led to a new coach in Schmidty and they haven’t been able to do much in the transfer window (at least not yet). But they’re in the Europa League and will be expected to challenge for the title again. Should be entertaining, one way or the other.

Up Next: PSV vs FC Emmen, Sunday at 6am (NZT)"

Some glowing post match praise also for Thomas.

"The PSV Supporters’ group agrees, they voted him Man of the Match for that performance. Former Danish international Kenneth Perez sure thinks too, here’s what he had to say about Thommo on the telly commentary:

He is the brain of PSV. He sees so often where the ball is going to end. I really like that in a player like him. He is also very stable and good at passing. I think he will be a very important player for PSV.”

Götze but know who you mean. Still only 28.PSV's coach is a German, which I guess has something to do with it.

Good news or bad news (re keeping his starting spot) for Thomas?

Along with Götze, PSV have signed Sangare, Fein and van Ginkel, all of whom are central/defensive midfielders who will be contenders for Thomas' role. Not great news but I know Schmidt loves using Thomas due to the crazy energy he brings to the midfield.

Good news is that Thomas can easily slip into those attacking midfield roles - PSV play a 4-2-2-2 similar to the Nix. PSV have Ihattaren, Gotze and Gakpo there who are all probably more assured on the team sheet than Thomas, but it's great that he offers versatility to the team

Not in match day squad as PSV have a comfortable 3-0 win at Thomas's old club, PEC Zwolle.

Not listed on the injured or suspended list for PSV, which is interesting.

3 of PSV's new midfield signings got playing time, with Götze and Sangaré starting. Fein off the bench. Götze with a goal.

Hopefully Ryan is not already on the outer. They do have a mid week Europe League tie against Granada, so maybe just squad rotation, and Zwolle are reasonably weak, so perhaps saving Thomas for the Spaniards.

Wasn't pretty but last minute assist by Thomas for PSV to get the 2-1 win.

Watched the second half. Thomas got a yellow card straight away for a foul, then was lucky not to concede after his soft back pass to the keeper is fired over the cross bar. Thomas passing game was generally pretty good and was involved alot playing quite a roving role laying deep at times and linking up play. Gotze is quality and Thomas will learn alot playing along side him.

Ex roar play Eric Beautiac (spelling?) was playing for Omonia.

Understand PSV still have a number of players missing due to Covid, and had asked that some of their Eredivisie games be postponed due a heavy workload (midweek Europa League games) stretching their squad - but Dutch FA said no.

Gets a rest from PSV's hectic schedule as they beat Willem II (14th), 3-0.

Willem II with player sent off at 63 mins, when score was 2-0. Woud's parent club struggling compared to last season, when they were up near the top.

PSV 3rd, two points behind Vitesse & Ajax.

With Nov's FIFA window, PSV don't play again until 23rd Nov, so Thomas gets a nice 2-3 week break. Hopefully he's managed to stay Covid free.

Looking at PSV's upcoming fixtures, they will be busy in the run-up to Christmas, so I'm assuming it's just standard player rest & rotation
