A few of the Aussie guys will probably just stay in Australia, and ride this out closer to their extended families.

De Vere definitely will. His pregnant wife being up in Brisbane now. I imagine joining her from NSW will qualify as 'essential' travel.

But yes hopefully NZ Immigration see sense and allow all the others, incl Visa players to return to NZ. Most importantly hopefully Davila can find a way to get to Mexico.

That's it. The season is over for now.

I really hope they'll find a way to finish it some time later this year.

Biggest disappointment ever, with our Nix on track for a GF...

The plan has changed! Following announcement by FFA as 12noon the original plan is now on hold and we're no longer flying out today.

Current plan is to fly out tomorrow afternoon (Weds) pending a successful resolution of some issues regarding logistics around the two week isolation.

Mandatory is ability to train. This is non-negotiable, especially for a professional football team.

This was stated to other CEs in a conference call yesterday.
Working on a solution which stakeholders are so far happy with it.

Training facilities have been identified and is of very good standard. It is in a very isolated place near Sydney giving us the ability to self-isolate.

FFA did great in having that venue approved by the Dept of Health of NSW and have agreed for us to train there during the two-week isolation period.

Now it's about logistics we're working through. We won't get on a plane until that is all resolved.

Domey is confident things will be resolved and things are going in the right decision.

All these decisions have been made with Gillie, the players and football ops staff at the club.

Everyone is very keen to see out the season and looking forward to getting it all done.

I am confident in predicting that we will not be playing another game this season.  In two weeks we will be flying home for another 2 weeks of self-isolation with the season either over or suspended

Even worse than predicted. Now these guys are in no man's land in a foreign country. The decision by the FFA, but also the club to go along with it, looks worse and worse by the day. We don't know what pressure they were under but I'm far from convinced player welfare has been prioritised by the club. These decisions were made far too quickly

I can't see how anyone looking at Europe or Asia thought this was going to go any other way.

The only logical thing to do. Hopefully the overseas guys and their families etc will feel well looked after - I'm sure the Phoenix will make sure of that. We want them to feel right at home here however its packaged eh!

Postponed? They still don’t get it. Look at the data, it takes at least three month to go through this, if we are lucky. Call if off, now! Look at the table add teams average points per game and do the Grand Final around Christmas/New Year. Or do what ever idea is better but admit its over.

What's the big rush to call it off though? If everything you say is true, we can just call it off in a few months. I'd rather they don't decide right now and see how things develop over coming months.

We are six months away from starting the new season. Instead of playing the FFA cup, start the season with the finals series from this year. Easy enough to work out a top six instead of fudging around show some decisiveness  for chamge.

A week in Sydney isolation was all in vain for the Wellington Phoenix, who will return home following the A-League's indefinite suspension.

Wellington's five import players have been granted clearance to return to New Zealand as the club packs its bags following six futile days of isolation in Sydney.

Massive credit to the players, staff, owners for seeing it through as far as they did. Very big demand on them all. I hope things go smoothly from here, but I doubt it, will probably need heaps more extra commitment from all involved.
Thank you Phoenix. Proud to be a fan.

Speaking of wages. At the end of all this with the expected recessions and international economic crisis. Loss of sports revenue due to broadcast losses and lack of sponsorship exposure. Professional sports players are surely going to have to take a big cut in earnings. Going to be interesting to see how that goes down in the sports world. Long overdue for many of the elite that earn far too much, but going to tough on others.

Just thinking of a couple of the major pro footy sponsor sectors - airlines and sports betting - they are getting smashed.

It's going to be a hugely challenging for all pro sports teams (like all businesses) around the world. I see the Warriors have already reached out asking for some Govt assistance.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120519729/warriors-look-for-government-help-as-nrl-season-suspended-indefinitely

There are some very sobering numbers in this article about perilous financial state of the NRL.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120496959/coronavirus-nrl-considering-moving-entire-competition-to-queensland-mining-facility

Haven't heard FFA be quite as alarmist about the A League, maybe because the season was nearing it's end, so they had received most of their TV money from Fox for this season. How are the individual clubs paid their TV money share, evenly over 12 months, or just during the season itself?

Anyway, they are in for a very big drop in revenue. No TV product no TV money. Each club will probably also lose the odd sponsor, as businesses struggle, sponsoring a football team will the first expense to be cut.

So as FFA receive less money from Fox, and the Nix receive less money from FFA, expect some hard decisions for the Welnix owners. They can't be expected to carry the extra funding gap. They already do more than enough. Costs will have to be cut, incl wages.

Sadly some office staff, and background coaching staff will either be let go completely, or have to go on unpaid leave.

All players on one year contracts (expire in May?) will be let go. So that's the youngsters Elliot, Scott, McGing, plus visa players Steinman & Hooper. Will be sad to see Steinman & Hooper go given how this season has gone for the Nix, but Welnix will need to cut their wages bill ASAP simple as that. Hooper's wages are obviously a big ticket item.

One possible alternative could be a short term loan deal, to a Euro club for either the German (Liga 3?) or Englishman (League One?) - as expect Euro leagues to restart before the A League does - but really loan deals will be unlikely. Could already be an over supply of unemployed footballers, so why bother getting someone on loan.

TAHW & McCowatt are also on one year deals that will expire. They could be retained, as imagine they are not on big wages, and are regulars in match day squads. Depends how bad the week to week financial bleeding, will be for the club. If it's real bad, they are gone too. I'm sure Declan could find a team for McCowatt somewhere in Europe.

Expect Cacace to be sold to a Euro club. Not a 'stressed sale', I'm sure Welnix won't give him away (Rob Morrison wouldn't like that), but as with Singh to Bayern it's a relatively easy way to bring in a nice lump sum of cash. Of course any sale, will be dictated on when the leagues in Europe can restart.

Welnix may also consider an offer for Davila. His exploits this season would have been noticed esp in MLS & Mexico. They maybe able to profit on that. A return for him to Indian Super League (ATK?) may even be a possibility. Though without being too morbid/insensitive, India could suffer from Coronavirus like no other country on earth. Who knows Krishna and Williams may end up looking to return down under.

No new signings until start date 2020/2021 A League confirmed. No point playing extra wages, when you have no confirmation of a start date.

Weenix academy. I understand even with the controversial pokie money, the academy is still a substantial outlay for Welnix. Expect some cuts there.

Will be some hard decisions for Welnix owners, not much fun, and sad to see a number of the playing 11 leave, without ever knowing how this season would have finished. But they will need to cut costs, as quickly as possible, simple as that.

It's a constantly changing environment. No-one knows for certain how this is going to pan out, but I'd say the A League has no show of restarting in April. Next month NZ & Australia are going to feel the full wrath of Coronavirus. Playing sport will not be on the agenda for months. If the 2019/2020 season is every completed, then yes it will be as pre season to the 2020/2021 one.

Whenever season 2020/2021 starts it will begin behind closed doors. Until a vaccine becomes widely available, large group gatherings will rightly be banned. There is no other way "to flatten the curve", other than social distancing. Season may even begin with all the teams having to be based in NSW and/or VIC, just so they can get some games to screen. Health of players, staff and general public needs to always be paramount. But without TV product & TV money there is no A League.
