http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5037354/Cash-splash-making-waves

How the he'll does a football club get given 1.7 million from a water safety foundation?

Are there other clubs getting that sort of cash?

Others are getting big grants.

Ole Academy in the 2008 year got:
Infinity Foundation  $164,520
Century Foundation $35,663
Scottwood trust $120,000

Miramar Rangers income for 2010 included:
NZCT $55,000
Infinity Trust $13,333

And Wharfies had "grant income" in the 2009 year of $121,000 and Stop Out got $150,000.

Theres has been plenty of grant  money going to clubs but we are always hearing thats its now drying up.

Lower Hutt : WSEF :: ACFC : Trillian?

From the headline I thought maybe they were investigating whether Lisa Pahl was man, woman or BEAST or something.

Your point? I think maybe this sort of thing is starting to be a little UNWISE.

Back to the original question how does a Football club get 1.7million over several years from a Water safety foundation? Shouldn't all the money be going to water safety? Also sorry if i am wrong but i thought they were no longer lower hutt pubs and had been brought out by Watson and Elvy??

I'm getting a bit embarrassed being associated with Lower Hutt. I've played and coached there for 10 years. But always stayed out of the politics of clubs.

But how does Lower Hutt get money from the pokies for Water Safety! Surely there are enough other ones that they could apply to for funding and the WATER safety foundation is at fault for giving this money out as well.

Thinking club move at the end of the year might be a good idea..

looks like in 2005 the club sold it to Terrence Melvin 75% and Graham Watson 25%

Isn't water safety just the name of the trust? In chch there is a rescue helicopter trust but that doesn't mean the money has to necessarily go to the one Westpac rescue helicopter place in NZ.

Basically the name of the trust is completely irrelevant.

The trust must distribute its proceeds according to its purposes, set out in its trust deed.

You can probably find the trust deed online.

It is pretty common to have a specific purpose (like water safety) and then a catch all charitable purpose.  This gives the trustees wide discretion, and is pretty much standard practice for these sorts of "purpose trusts".

I see your point smithy but it still sounds a bit iffy to me. I know for a fact other football clubs have gone for grants from water safety nz and been turned down numerous times but by the looks of things when Lower Hutt applies they never fail. Nights pointed out the machines are in "Lower Hutts Pubs" but they don't even own them now and for sometime by the looks of things.

Overall Water safety nz are the biggest at fault here and i guess the only reason Lower hutt will get in trouble is if they haven't been spending the money on what they have said they would on the grant application.

So Watersafety nz shouldn't give any money to water safety and give it all to sports teams?

Or it could give most to water safety and some to sports clubs. Just as one alternative to your rather narrow, all or nothing scenario...

The Water Safety Education Foundation's authorised purpose is

  • Develop/promote new and enhance existing water safety education projects and programmes, in order that everyone in New Zealand will have the water safe attitudes, skills and behaviour to use and enjoy the environment safely.

  • Donations to recognised charitable organisations within the local community to further the objectives of these groups.

  • In the year to 30 September 2010 they distributed $2.2m dollars, $1.4m to Water Safey New Zealand and the rest to sports clubs (mostly).

The full list includes Lower Hutt City AFC, Petone Soccer Club, Wainuiomata AFC and Team Wellington. You can view the list here

This is what the article reported forms part of the Internal Affairs investigation.

Hey if the Lower Hutt can get that sort of money, if it's in the remit of the Trust and it's all above board then good on them. At this stage though there appears to be cloud hanging over how the money is distributed by the Trust itself (as opposed to anything Lower Hutt has done).

Lower Hutt received the following last year from the WSEF

    Lower Hutt City AFC 30,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 33,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 30,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 30,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 30,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 35,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 40,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 30,000.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 8,100.00

    Lower Hutt City AFC 40,000.00

Must point out that if you look on the website Petone and Wainui also got a bit of money from them but nothing even close to this. Even more interesting when you look at the applications that got turned down several other Wellington football and rugby clubs applied and missed out and Lower hutt AFC isnt on that list once.

Yakcall - I wouldn't get too concerned about it.  I am not from your club, but these stories always start out to sound really earth-shattering and turn out to be misconstrued or without the background information to support the rumours.

From an outsider, I can see Lower Hutt club has always been an envy of other clubs, jealousy is the curse of a lot of evil, and they probably do have a lot going for them, grounds, facilities, the only club to have a mens and women's team in the Central league, academies, teams in most JPL's if not all, a girls academy - so a lot of good and it takes clubs like that to ensure football stays alive in the junior ranks in a country where rugby is so popular.

As a smaller club we will continue to aim to grow to the power of the bigger clubs - hopefully with a little more funding - the money is out there, just need the dedicated people around to apply!

I'm hoping so! I've been quite proud of coaching at the club and the work they do with Juniors.
There are good people that work for Lower Hutt, but there are also people that spoil it for the rest.
What the women keeper did, doesn't look good for Lower Hutt. Lower Hutt getting all this money, where others have applied and failed.

Guess its a case of waiting for more information.

Saying that, I love the kids I coach and the parents I work with.

Well I was very impressed with the Rangers Soccer School over Easter.  A great initiative by the club.

Maybe the club should invest in some anger management course for its women goalkeepers but.

A small Hutt Valley club - but I don't think idolise is the right word, just stating what they have without any prejudice (unlike the tone of your response!)

Yak From what I read in the paper and from a colleague at work whose daughter went to the same school as the Karori player, she was a bully right through school, so whilst not condoning it, I think it does take two to tango, and shows there is always a lot more to a story. But yes, violence does not solve things and the player needs to get a grip.  Although in saying that I did want to release on a player in our game on Saturday...tsk tsk

I am not sure if envy is the right word there to be fair.

But it's easier to be able to put out all those teams, and the fancy advertising posters all over the Hutt Valley when you're being funneled a few hundred thousand dollars, at the expense of other rival clubs who have directly been declined funding for the same activities.

I give credit to all the clubs who manage to put out the teams without the same level of funding.

Also, I am not sure the full Internal Affairs investigation report is available online?

NEWSFLASH: Pokie machine system slightly suspect.

Come on people, we all know the whole system is a bit dodge.  Lower Hutt aren't the only ones with their hands in the cookie jar by a long stretch.

And that's nothing against anyone else either, it just is what it is.
