Hi there guys. I'm an English student studying Sports Coaching. Some of you may have seen Brandon (@kiwibardy) shout me out on twitter. For my dissertation, I'm looking at comparing football in NZ to England, but specifically I'm looking at: 1) Men's Premier Regional Leagues (North, Central, Mainland) 2) Women's Premier Regional Leagues (North/Central). I picked these because there's info available, but it's not mainstream at all and I've not seen anyone else do anything similar.

If you have any opinions/info on the up and coming seasons, please let me know! I'm trying to collect as much information as possible before the season starts. As it stands, I have a good understanding of the structure of NZ football thanks to Brandon. I now need to specifically focus on those leagues, looking at factors which could affect a team's performance. Transfers, squad age, amount of times training a week, club budgets etc. I'll then compare similar info to leagues in England and make comparisons between the two countries. Whether certain factors have a bigger influence in England etc.

It's a little difficult at the moment because we're still in pre-season, but if you have any opinions/predictions or know anyone that would have invaluable opinions on how a team/teams may perform this season, let me know! Feel free to follow my account on twitter @footyNZ. You can drop me a message there, or fire me over an email on '[email protected]'

Many thanks, James

Wild rumour time. FC struggling for players for the MPL. FC to merge with Utd and take the place in the MPL........

I wonder what Halswell will think of that??

Eddie Ashton to Chch Utd and the Lapslie boys to Cashmere.

Wow, maybe things are falling apart at FC. Surely your original rumour can't be true and FC join with Utd 3 weeks before the season starts. Maybe that was all in the plan from the beginning?

I’m sure there is someone from either club that will be able to correct me if it’s not true.

Wow wah wee wah. Heard from another random source (not connected to either club) that this whole Riccarton Shamrock Avon Burnside Burndale FC 2011 Christchurch Utd witchery may actually be happening!  What is going on?!?! Surely it can't happen with 3 weeks before the season kicks off?!?!

Does it matter if it happens before or after the season has started ? Looks good for Waimak to get promoted 2020 if that was to happen.

What are the logistics for this to happen? Can 2 teams merge without a club merging? Or do players have to transfer to 1 of the clubs? Do Mainland have to approve anything?

2 teams can merge without clubs merging - Waterside & Karori Swifts did it for a year before they formally merged

Manukau United is a merger of the first teams of Manukau City and Mangere United, who both still operate as seperate clubs (the plan is fo them to eventually merge)

A merger will get rid of the bye in the CCL and make that a six team league.

No because their 1st team took me on the Waimak div1/2 side in the Waimak tournament, so couldn’t have been due to a lack of players (unless some of their contracts state they have to be paid more to travel to Dunedin as was planned)

I heard a rumour over the weekend that cashmere have signed Southern Utd’s Coughlan for the MPL. Can anyone confirm this?? Isn’t he a staff member of football south. Does this mean he will be leaving this job?? Also possible replacement for Hoyle at the Dragons next year??

Was told that Coastal were looking at signing one of the Southern United players, unsure which one.

Stephen Hoyle hopes to be back for the ISPS Handa Premiership for the 2019/20 season.

Maybe my sources were in-correct about which club he is going to. Could Coastal afford him?? I bet he would not be cheap. Would be a solid signing for the dragons if he is in Chch for the season.

Coastal are signing a youth Southern player that has been promoted into the Senior team for the second half of National League.

Everyone is a free agent at the end of the season (unless they have been red flagged so that means no official transfers ?)

Technically that would be uni aren’t relegated rather than going up wouldn’t it? If a team was to be promoted it should be Halswell, however they’ve not built for a season in the MPL so would be interesting if that happened.

Utd definitely seem to have built for the MPL with the $$$ being paid to players!
