Hi Broonie

First time posting so be kind.

I think this is a massively important question that Broonie raises, what has changed ? why are we no longer getting the same number of players into the NZ rep teams that we historically have ? been out of the game for a while, so can someone tell me what we doing diffidently to the other federations in terms of youth development.

Does our local governing body have to much input ?

Do we need a centralized academy along the lines of the ole ?

Which clubs have half decent youth development programs ?

Lots of questions I know, anyone got any answers to the above.

Hi, one of my regular moans - I don't see it getting any better soon now that Mainland are working with the new licence / elite club model. The players coming through 13th and over and picked via Mainland FTC are going to be the ones that can afford the new ridiculous fees charged or imposed, not neccesarily just the most talented. There are planty of players who did reps now playing outside the premier youth leagues.

Not even thinking of how many will burn out or get fed up when they MUST train 3 days per week minimum and not bve allowed to play with their mates in thye school comp.

Good example of this in another sport. A decent basketball player called Steven Adams wasn't able to play for NZ age group teams due to financial reasons. Money shouldn't be the reason an elite player isn't able to play. I would hope that clubs would allow good dialogue between themselves and little Johnny/Jill parent's if money is an issue. Also, sometimes a parent needs to just ask the club if options are available to help financially.

I personally don't have an issue with the charging for coaching, it is no different to paying for music lessons, swimming lessons, scouts/guides etc. Sometimes it is finding what your child is passionate about.

Yes 2 - 0 with 20 to play, with Tech scoring in the 71th and then 81st and 82nd and the the fourth deep in added time.  Coastal should have got something out of the game but have a long injury list and run out of legs.

I've not posted in a while and this might not be the right thread.

The following topic i've shared with many over the years is why are we not getting our players in the world cup age group squads for males, my concern is not directed at the feamle side of the game because as a region we have batted well above our weight with the amount of players from Canterbury that get in various nz age group squads, i've seen the u17 and u20 male squads that have recently been announced and , to my knowledge but might be wrong, none have been through our systems or clubs in Canterbury.

this is not directed to any one in particular but as a football community why are we not getting players in these squads.

we roughly have 10% of the population so should have at least 2 players in the squad.

Thoughts

Broonie, you are right on the button. We've had many a chats about this. The problem lies at the top level. We are stuck trying to get under 15 year old players to the FTC level. It does not work - only helps those that can afford it. How many players down the grade come up and surprise later on in years, we don't account for that. Have a look at what what Canterbury Rugby is now doing - no grade reps below U15. I will be interested on how this goes.

Again I ask the question, where is the proof that Coastal have improved? Another poor result at Garrick yesterday, lost as many games as they have won in the MPL. Nobody was able to give me the answer last week and I would be surprised if anybody can answer it this week

Doesn't really answer my question. More just reaffirms that Coastal are no better this season, and that all the hype is unjustified. Another season with no trophies for the self proclaimed Messiah

To be honest having seen a number of their starting line ups I think they've been struggling a lot with injuries or other issues as there seems to be a lot of different players starting each week.

For example one minute Ash Wellbourn is there, the next minute he's not.

I think the only constant has been Hughsey on the bench as the spare keeper :)

Other constant is Ekow still being sent from the bench and missing games. Oh, and a preference to entice quality players from elsewhere rather than developing their own (Uncle Willy must be proud). Kudos to CCL clubs Waimak, Parklands, Burwood and SAS for taking the hard but ultimately sustainable road to improve organically.

I think Coastal are doing great this season. I think Ekow lost quite a few players so to not go backwards is a good effort. Bringing players in from outside of Chch is awesome for our region. I mean... Look at Bays... they could do with some fresh signings to try compete. I also dont think Coastal should ever be demanding trophies. They are a small club and have been mid table even back in the Rangers and New Brighton days. To compete with Tech is enough of a compliment for them.

Nomads, Bays, FC and maybe Selwyn all look to have gone backwards... But nobody talks about them? How good are Western though!!? Be an even better league when Chch come up. Can see Western getting some signings and giving South Island a go.

If you call wins in the English Cup, over a handful of the old Southern League titles, runner up in the Chatham Cup  and several wins in the junior national cups and also playing in the old National league then Rangers did not win anything. New Brighton wins in the Southern League, English Cup wins as well as quarter finals in the Chatham Cup and also played in the old National League so they did a bit of winning as well.

Yeah i remember the 1993 Chatham cup final like it was yesterday. Our Rangers team got thrashed 6-0 at Mclean Park to a good Napier City Rovers side. We look to be playing very good football this season and im happy with that. Hopefully we can kick on and have a strong finish

Yes NCR were having a good run then, regular quarter-finalist inthe Cup during the 1990's.

After Nomads this weekend, finish with the sides currently in 6th , 7th and 8th so plenty of points to be banked for Coastal before the South Isand League commences.

Obligatory mention of halftime score of 0-0 and what might have happened if Garry Lund had buried those headers in first half. It was before my time in Chch, but I've seen the video and NCR were overwhelming in 2nd half.
